Everything We Know About ‘Dexter: Resurrection’
Dexter: Resurrection will mark the return of the titular character. The show is set to air this summer. Here is everything we know:
Dexter: Resurrection will mark the return of the iconic vigilante serial killer, Dexter Morgan.
Michael C. Hall earlier this week returned as Dexter on the small screen in Dexter: Original Sin, despite the end of the previous series. There have been two times where everyone thought they would never see Dexter again, but both times, there has turned out to be more in store.
This time around, he returns in a new sequel series to Dexter: New Blood, set directly after the end of that series. While Dexter: Original Sin is mostly a prequel, it will also act to bridge the gap between New Blood and Resurrection.
While there are a lot of questions yet to be answered about Dexter: Resurrection, there is still a lot already known, both through official sources and some mostly accurate insiders.
Here is everything we know:
Dexter Morgan is Alive
While Dexter: New Blood felt definitive, as the end of the road for Dexter, the announcement of Resurrection shook everything up. Dexter will get another chance at life. The pilot of Dexter: Original Sin shows us the aftermath of New Blood. Dexter is in critical condition and is taken to the hospital.
One of the nurses claims Dexter has no pulse, and they’re trying to bring it back through a defibrillator, and his heart re-starts, with Dexter saying, “A beating heart. I’ll take it.” As of right now, we don’t know how Resurrection will be set up, but it’s likely Original Sin will show us some more of current Dexter by the end and jump-start his journey in Resurrection.
Earlier, it wasn’t clear if Resurrection was going to be Dexter serving as Harrison’s dark passenger or if it was going to be him back alive. Now, it seems clear that Dexter survives, and Michael C. Hall will lead the sequel series.
It Starts Filming in January 2025 and will air in June 2025
Dexter: Resurrection will start filming the first week of January 2025, according to creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips. He also said that the show will start airing in June of the same year. It’s a very quick turnaround for the show, but in Dexter fashion, it is not unprecedented. Dexter: Original Sin started filming in June of 2024 and is already airing in December.
Regardless, it will be a tight fit, but one that the show can certainly make. Showtime has already announced that it will be released in Summer 2025, which lines up with Clyde Phillips’ June announcement.
Dexter: Resurrection Will Have 10 Episodes
The original Dexter series featured 12-episode seasons throughout its 8-season run, while Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Original Sin were both 10 episodes each. It seems like Resurrection will continue the trend of the latter rather than the former. This was first reported by DanielRPK on his Patreon.
The 10 episodes will likely make the show run from June all the way to August or September, depending on when in June the show will start airing. It’s also unclear at this stage if Resurrection will feature multiple seasons or will be another limited series.
Dexter: Resurrection is set in New York City
The show will be set in New York City, which is a large departure from the remote small town featured in New Blood. That was still, however, set in the state of New York so Dexter hasn’t really gotten very far away by the sound of it. This was also reported by insider Daniel Richtman on Patreon.
The original Dexter series was set in Miami, so it will be a return to a major city setting for the franchise. New York City is still massively different from Miami in nearly every conceivable way, so it will offer a different set of challenges to the character, especially if he wants to continue his vigilante ways.
It’s unclear if the series will actually film in New York, as the Dexter franchise usually shoots elsewhere from the setting. For the original Dexter, the stand-in for Miami was Los Angeles and Long Beach—for New Blood, the New York state setting was shot in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. For Original Sin, which is set in Miami, the production was filmed in both Los Angeles and Miami.
Peter Dinklage Will Play The Villain
Dexter: Resurrection has reportedly tapped Peter Dinklage to play the villain for the season. In a sea of iconic villains from the Dexter universe, Peter Dinklage might be the biggest actor yet to be cast in an antagonistic role. It’s unclear as of yet who he will portray, but from other news, it does sound like he will play some sort of leadership figure, as there were reports of a fixer who works under Dinklage being cast.
It was first reported that Peter Dinklage was in talks for the role by insider Jeff Sneider. It has since been corroborated by DanielRPK, and added that he will portray a villain.
Harry, Harrison, and Angel Batista will return
DanielRPK has also reported that all 3 of these characters will make a return in the series. While unclear what their exact roles will be, it does sound like they won’t just be cameos.
Harry Morgan, portrayed by James Rennar, was absent from New Blood as Deb took over the role of Dexter’s dark passenger, but it sounds like he will make a return. We don’t yet know if it is as the dark passenger or if it’s something else entirely.
It’s unlikely to be flashbacks considering Christian Slater would be able to fill in that role if required, considering he plays a younger Harry in the prequel series.
Harrison (Jack Alcott), Dexter’s son for those who may not remember, was a massive part of New Blood. He was the second lead, and after the series, he was set to lead Season 2 of the show as the lead, with Dexter presumably dead at the time.
This second season of 10 episodes was fully written and ready to go according to showrunner Clyde Phillips before Michael C. Hall called and asked for the character to return. This previous iteration was meant for Harrison to find his way to New York City to start a new life.
While they have changed the lead and presumably changed a lot of other aspects to fit this new iteration, it does sound like the setting of New York City was kept for the new show. It makes sense considering how intriguing the location could end up being.
It’s still yet to be known how big of a role Harrison will have in the series, but it’s always possible he is the co-lead considering how New Blood ends.
Angel Batista was a major part of the original series, being one of the only characters to be a series regular throughout its run. David Zayas’ performance as the character was adored by Dexter fans, and it sounds like there will be more coming from that.
While Angel did appear in New Blood, it wasn’t really a massive role. He does, however, find out that Dexter is alive and survives the events of the original finale. It’s hard to know what his role can be considering the circumstances, but I’m sure every Dexter fan would love to see more of Batista.
Other Dexter: Resurrection Casting
Gillian Anderson (X-Files, Hannibal) was in talks for a role in the series at one point. It’s unclear if she declined or if she has been cast.
Uma Thurman (Pulp fiction, Kill Bill) has reportedly been offered the role of Charley, who works under Peter Dinklage’s character as a fixer. This is potentially the same role Gillian Anderson was in talks for.
Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians, Fresh Off the Boat) was also reportedly offered to play a NYPD detective in Resurrection.
Things We Don’t Know
There are a lot of things we don’t yet know about the series that will likely be revealed in the coming weeks with the series filming in a few weeks. Question marks like where it will be filmed will have definite answers, but some may go unanswered until a little bit later into filming.
Some key things we don’t yet know are if Jennifer Carpenter will return as Dexter’s dark passenger for the series or if Harry will take over that aspect. There isn’t any confirmation yet on if Angela Bishop will return either, even if it seems likely she will.
We don’t know how many seasons the show is set to have. We don’t know if this will truly be the end for Dexter or if there is more left after.
There’s a lot of other unanswered questions for the show, but some of that makes it even more exciting, especially considering the series is only 7 months away. I, for one, am happy that the series is returning and there is more story to tell with the character.
