Everything We Know About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ So Far
2025 is set to be one of the biggest years yet for Marvel, with 3 films and 6 shows; But the biggest task for the studio next year will be filming the next Avengers films.
With filming for Avengers: Doomsday just on the horizon, here is everything we know thus far about the highly anticipated film.
Starting off with easily the biggest headline out of SDCC this year…
Robert Downey Jr. Returns To Marvel As Dr. Doom.
The announcement that rocked Hall H and set the internet into a frenzy was the reveal that Iron Man star and longtime MCU alumni, Robert Downey Jr., would be returning to the cinematic universe with a brand new twist. Instead of reprising his role as the now iconic Tony Stark, he would be taking on one of the most well-known Marvel villains, Dr. Victor Von Doom.
This was met with a whirlwind of reactions on both sides of the aisle. Some fans found the move to be too reactionary following the troubles with the Multiverse Saga’s previous villain Kang the Conqueror, while others were ready to move on from the failed villain and were excited to see RDJ tackle yet another beloved character. No matter where you land in the debate, it’s hard to deny that this was a good move by Marvel to get the general audience on board with the next two Avengers films.
This move of course opened the floodgates of what would be possible in Doomsday…
Chris Evans And Hayley Atwell Join The Cast
Earlier this week it was reported by TheWrap that Captain America actor Chris Evans would be making his return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday in an unknown role. The actor last appeared as a cameo in this year’s Deadpool & Wolverine as Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch, a character he last played in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Evan’s character of Captain America was last seen in Avengers: Endgame wherein Steve Rogers travels back in time to replace the stolen Infinity Stones, moments later an older version of the character is seen by Sam Wilson, whom he bestows the title of Captain America onto, it is then revealed that Steve settled down in the 1950s with his love, Peggy Carter.
Days after it was confirmed that Chris Evans was returning it was also revealed by Deadline that Peggy Carter actress, Hayley Atwell, would be returning to the big screen in Doomsday. Deadline is also reporting that Atwell will be playing Agent Carter specifically, but the Multiverse Saga has recently had an obsession with Peggy’s alternate universe person, Captain Carter, so we can’t say for sure which version of the character will be spotlighted.
Who Else Is Cast In Avengers: Doomsday?
During the same SDCC Marvel Studios panel in which both Doomsday and RDJ as Doom were revealed, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige confirmed that cast members from Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps would all be involved in the two upcoming Avengers films. Based on this information it can be expected that Anthony Mackie would be reprising his role of Captain America and possibly Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon.
As far as the team from Thunderbolts* goes, it’s a bit harder to say as many are expecting lots of casualties to take place. It’s probably safe to assume that Florence Pugh’s Yelena survives the film and makes the jump to Avengers considering the actress’ star power. Everyone else though may be fair game to be cannon fodder for Lewis Pullman’s Sentry.
What would a Dr. Doom centric movie be without the Fantastic Four? Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will be playing Reed Richard, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm respectively in next year’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The quartet of characters are confirmed to play a major role in Doomsday with insider DanielRPK also reporting that Marvel is looking for a teen actor to take on the role of Reed and Sue’s son Franklin Richards, who is set to appear as a toddler in next year’s Fantastic Four film.
Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch has also confirmed that he will have a role in the film telling TV Groove:
“I’m really excited not only to work with the Russo brothers again, but also to have Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom. I think there’s going to be some really cool developments ahead, and I’m excited to see what happens next.”
When Is Avengers: Doomsday Filming?
It was revealed by director Joe Russo that Avengers: Doomsday is set to film Spring 2025 in the UK. This gives the film about a one year turn around, with it set to release May 1st, 2026. Marvel is no stranger to these tight turn-arounds, often being criticized for the overworking of VFX artists, but the film is currently not expected to move off the date.
Avengers: Doomsday will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo with a script written by Stephen McFeely. The film is set to star Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anthony Mackie, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Florence Pugh, and more. In theaters May 1st, 2026.
