‘Death of a Unicorn’ Digital Streaming Date Revealed
A new report reveals the digital streaming date for A24’s Death of a Unicorn, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega.
A24 has not had a great year so far, and Death of a Unicorn has only further contributed to that. The movie just had the worst opening weekend of the year so far, grossing only $5.5 million in its first weekend, landing it in the 5th spot of the week after releasing in over 3,000 cinemas.
According to the reliable predictors at DVDReleaseDates, Death of a Unicorn will be available to buy/rent on digital from April 29th.
Compared to other current releases, Death of a Unicorn simply didn’t stand out. With stronger films dominating the box office, such as Working Man and even Snow White, as well as A Minecraft Movie just around the corner, this one felt like an afterthought, lacking the depth or emotional impact of A24’s best work.
The film failed to carve out its own identity and relied heavily on links to Jurassic Park during marketing, with that even becoming one of the film’s key marketing phrases. This made the film appear more as a heartless impersonation, with a less funny and less imaginative concept that failed to capture anyone’s attention.
This underperformance is part of a worrying trend for A24, which has struggled to find consistent box office hits recently. They also struggled with the recent release of Ayo Edebiri’s vehicle Opus, which also had a heavy focus on the actors leading them and less on the actual plot of the movie. Perhaps A24 needs to invest in its writers and marketing team as much as it does the actors at the front of the project.
Despite boasting an exciting cast, with Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega leading the charge, the movie failed to make any movement at the box office or in the wider conversation, and will likely be forgotten about soon enough.
It’s a shame, as Death of a Unicorn seems to be the mix of fantasy and comedy that we don’t get anymore, but A24 has failed to make it appeal widely and suffered as a result. Hopefully it will find its audience when it releases on digital, though only time will tell if that becomes the case.
