Back to deliver another drama for cinephiles to have a great liking for, Damien Chazelle is set to begin production on his next film this October.
Following his newfound freedom from director’s jail for his involvement in 2022’s Babylon, Damien Chazelle’s next film (set in a prison) is currently eyeing a 2025 release and is looking to begin production very soon.
As per Jordan Ruimy of World of Reel, Chazelle’s next film will begin production this October in order to make a 2025 release. The film is also described as a “mid-budget” drama with action elements. Damien’s frequent collaborator and film composer, Justin Hurwitz, previously mentioned that he wanted to do an action film next with Chazelle, mentioning that it’d be “good to get away from jazz”, so is it possible that the same will happen with this new film?
Possible Influences?
Chazelle cited Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita before, as an inspiration to Babylon, and he recently hosted a screening at American Cinematheque for La Strada, a film that focuses more on a mental “prison” giving fans hope that his next be taking elements from Fellini’s filmography. Fellini, a famous director from the Italian neorealism era, is known for tackling surreal elements in his dramas.
The actual plot of the film is yet to be fully disclosed but we do know that it is set in a prison, but we aren’t aware who will be starring in the film. Chazelle usually likes to work again with his previous stars though. Perhaps it would be someone like Diego Calva, due to his compliments of him saying that Diego “had this kind of Al Pacino-level ability to command the camera without seeming to do anything.” in an article from The New York Times.
Regardless of any future updates or casting choices yet to be revealed, It is for sure that Chazelle’s upcoming film is highly anticipated.
