Cillian Murphy Eyed For Damien Chazelle’s Prison Movie

According to a new report, a second offer for a role in the next Damien Chazelle film has been given out, and it’s to Cillian Murphy.

Cillian Murphy Eyed For Damien Chazelle's Prison Movie

On April 11th 2024, it was announced at CinemaCon that Damien Chazelle would be reuniting with Paramount Pictures for his sixth feature which would be set in a prison. Not much is known yet about plot, character details, cast, etc. However, a new report came out yesterday revealing that Daniel Craig has been offered for the lead role. And now it looks like Cillian Murphy could be joining the fray.

This would be Chazelle’s first film since 2022’s Babylon which was both a critical and commercial failure despite gaining something of a cult classic status in some online circles, leaving Chazelle in what some people refer to as “director jail” which is a metaphorical place filmmakers go to when their movies don’t do well.

Cillian Murphy Offered For Second Lead Role In Damien Chazelle’s Prison Film

Insider, Daniel Richtman (DanielRPK), reports that the second casting offer of the movie has been sent out and that Cillian Murphy is being eyed for the other lead role in the upcoming Damien Chazelle-directed movie.

A very unexpected pairing that sounds almost too good to be true if one were to be honest, having the Oscar-winning star of Oppenheimer play one of the leads of the next film from the director of the equally nominated La La Land feels a little surreal.

Paramount is also seemingly trustworthy of Chazelle to be making offers to A-stars such as Craig and Murphy both with this film, despite his latest film bombing very badly. It’s also noteworthy to add that maybe with casting offers being reported recently we may soon get to know about more details regarding the film soon, in terms of plot details and more.

One theory that was floating about when the film was first announced last year was that the film would be inspired by Federico Fellini’s La Strada, which follows the main character in a mental prison, this is because of Chazelle himself hosting a screening of the film at American Cinematheque just a month prior to the announcement.

Even the first pitch of La La Land seemingly took inspiration from La Strada with Chazelle describing the plot to The Hollywood Reporter as “[involving] a jailbreak and a prison sort of thing, and the main character was an autistic suicidal depressive. But somehow they went into a planetarium and flew up to space.”
