Christopher Nolan Already Planning Next Film After 'The Odyssey'; Robert Downey Jr. To Play A Big Role

Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is yet to begin production, but he’s already planning his next film following the adaptation of Homer’s legendary poem, and it might reunite Christopher Nolan and Robert Downey Jr.

As of late last year, we’ve known that Academy Award-winner, Sir Christopher Nolan, will be directing a film adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, which is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems and one of the oldest works of literature still widely read by modern audiences. Certainly, it will likely be a difficult task creating a film adaptation of The Odyssey, which is divided into 24 books, so this will likely be Nolan’s most ambitious project since Oppenheimer yet.

We’ve also learnt that The Odyssey will have a star-studded cast consisting of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron, with more expected to be announced for the film. It’s unknown which roles everyone will be playing in Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey, but one thing to expect is for Matt Damon to play Greek hero Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the Trojan War. The film was also reported to begin production in early 2025 and is slated to release on July 17th, 2026.

Christopher Nolan and Robert Downey Jr. Might Collaborate After The Odyssey

The surprise though appears to be that Sir Christopher Nolan is reportedly already planning for his next film after The Odyssey, as first reported by a reputable film and television insider, Daniel Richtman, also known by his online moniker DanielRPK. It was also reported that Nolan wants past collaborator Robert Downey Jr. to play a big role in it.

It’s an easy guess that Nolan wants to work with Robert Downey Jr. again after Oppenheimer, the film which earned the actor the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and also secured other wins at the 96th Academy Awards such as Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Score, Best Editing and also Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.

It’s also not very difficult to track when Christopher Nolan’s next film after The Odyssey would be, as he’s previously had a regular film schedule, with one film releasing every three years. Additionally, with Robert Downey Jr. playing Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which also are set to begin production soon this year, he would be free for a Nolan film two to three years from now.

Sir Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron. It releases in theaters on July 17, 2026.
