Adria Arjona Lands Maxima Role For 'Man of Tomorrow'... Or Is It Wonder Woman?

American actress Adria Arjona has landed a coveted female supporting role in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow film.

The news follows recent auditions and screen tests for the project, where a shortlist of actresses was initially provided by Deadline that said Arjona, Ella Purnell and Marisa Abela were testing for the project. Director James Gunn immediately shot down this rumour, stating that he had never even met Purnell and Abela, though he is great friends with Arjona. Eva de Dominici, Grace Van Patten, and Sydney Chandler were added onto this by The Hollywood Reporter soon after, which Gunn did not dispute. Adria has now been confirmed for the role, and whilst most have assumed its Maxima, some are questioning whether its Wonder Woman.

In the DC comics, Maxima is an alien conqueror queen who views Superman (played by David Corenswet in Man of Tomorrow) as her only compatible mate, which Clark is not interested in at all. This, of course, would play into Gunn’s sensibilities as he just did something similar with Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio’s Eve Teschmacher in Superman. Daniel Richtman notes that Gunn used Authority members as codenames for the Justice Gang, implying that the Maxima casting call could be a disguise for Wonder Woman.

Jeff Sneider, a journalist, stated that he has heard Maxima has a minor cameo role in the film, as important as Supergirl was in the last Superman movie.

Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, Lars Eidinger, Adria Arjona, Rachel Brosnahan, Edi Gathegi, Skyler Gisondo, Nathan Fillion, Isabel Merced, Aaron Pierre, and Sara Sampaio. The film is currently in production.
