‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ Review: A Long Overdue Return

Despite some minor flaws, the series is shaping up to be an exciting entry in the Avatarverse. Read our first impressions below.

It’s felt like forever since we found out that the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender wold continue in an all new series and over a decade later, it is finally here. Here is our review of the first 6 episodes of Avatar: Seven Havens

Avatar Seven Havens, the latest entry in the franchise follows the latest reincarnation of The Avatar, a unique individual able to master all four bending elements. This new Avatar’s name is Pavi, a young earthbender who lives in a post-apocalyptic world where the Avatar is seen as humanity’s destroyer. Read the official synopsis below:

Avatar: Seven Havens is an all-new series from creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm, a young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra. In this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.

From the moment I started the first episode I was overjoyed to return to this world, it’s been over a decade since The Legend Of Korra ended and as someone who doesn’t follow the other forms of Avatarverse media this series was long overdue.

As the episode progressed I began to notice some minor issues, the first of which lies in the show’s animation. While I really adore the art style they went with I have noticed at times that the animation felt a bit wonky, I could literally count the frames as a character moves. This isn’t to say that happens all the time but it does break your immersion once in a while.  From what I’ve noticed this occurs throughout the first batch of episodes.

I’ve also noticed a moment where a character’s outline is momentarily thicker than the other characters which made me do a double take. There was also a moment where a joke didn’t land as well as it should due to the voice acting sounding unenthusiastic.

With those issues aside it’s time to get into the bulk of the show starting with the main cast. In the starting episodes, the series manages to get you invested in the characters. Jae (Major Curda) is an absolute joy to watch as he copes with his entire world being turned upside down in a matter of minutes. The twins, Pavi (Saheli Khan) and Nisha (Aishu Devan) are definitely the highlight, from their first interaction you know the duo will be an absolute joy to watch and seeing them adventure alongside each other is definitely something to look forward to as the show progresses.

Another part that piqued my interest were the mysteries. In most if not every episode in the first half of the season, a new mystery adds itself to the overall story. Not only does this have my mind working overtime trying to piece things together, it also makes me excited as I look forward to discussing the episodes with others and see what kind of theories pop up along the way.

As we come to the end of my first impressions I’d like to highlight one more aspect of the series that took me by surprise, the pacing. Despite being standard 20-minute long episodes, they can feel a bit short and that might be due to how quickly it feels like the story progresses. I was surprised by how quickly we arrived at certain plot points and it gets me excited for how much more is in store for the remaining episodes.

Overall I’ll say my first impressions of the series are pretty positive, the issues mentioned previously in regards to animation, art style and voice acting are by no means groundbreaking and shouldn’t deter you from what’s shaping up to be an intriguing story with a lovable cast.
