Tom Cruise has revealed his next film following 2026’s Digger and it’s another legacy sequel, this time following up Tony Scott’s Days of Thunder, where Cruise will reprise his role as Cole Trickle.
Announced via a video posted to Cruise’s social media pages, Days of Thunder 2 is officially set for a Summer 2028 release date with A-lister Anne Hathaway joining the cast.
In the video, the two actors walk to stand in front of a NASCAR car at Daytona, when Hathaway, who is currently pregnant, reveals that once she gives birth, she will begin production on Days of Thunder 2 with Cruise and director Jonathan Levine.
Since the release of the video, it has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit that the film will be shot for IMAX.
Other stars from the original film, such as Nicole Kidman, Randy Quaid, Cary Elwes, Michael Rooker, and John C Reilly likely are not returning, though the it is possible.
Released back in 1990, Days of Thunder was directed by Tony Scott, brother of Ridley Scott, and another collaboration between Tony and Tom Cruise after they united on Top Gun. The movie plays very similarly to Top Gun, but instead of following planes, it follows NASCAR racing.
Days of Thunder 2 hits theatres June 2, 2028, 38 years after the original film.
