‘Donnie Darko’ Director Unveils Official Sequel; Plans For More Films
Director Richard Kelly has officially announced the follow-up sequel to his cult classic film ‘Donnie Darko’.
It’s been almost 25 years now since the now iconic film Donnie Darko has graced the big screen. Today, Variety has reported on an official sequel to the film.
The story of Donnie Darko will be continued in an upcoming novel titled “The Philosophy of Time Travel”. The book, which was written by filmmaker Richard Kelly, will pick up in 1988 right after the events of the film which saw Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) fulfill his destiny and die after a plane engine falls on his bedroom.

This wouldn’t be the first time the future of the franchise was explored. Back in 2009, a sequel to Donnie Darko was released titled S. Darko, which follows Donnie’s sister Samantha as she finds herself stuck in a desert town after her car breaks down, and experiences visions of the end of the universe just like her brother. S. Darko was panned by critics and fans alike and Richard Kelly had no input into the film.
Kelly, who hasn’t sat in the director’s chair since 2009’s The Box, still has ambitions for Donnie Darko on the big screen however. He has plans to adapt the upcoming novel into an animated feature as well as a live-action sequel that will take place 28 years after the events of Donnie Darko. The director has hopes that he can bring together the full original cast for these projects.
“The Philosophy of Time Travel” will be released later this year and is now available for preorder.
