‘Lanterns’ Theory: Laura Linney Might Be Carol Ferris

Lanterns second trailer has been released, introducing a new cast member to the DC Universe: Laura Linney. She is one of the few characters in the show without a name so audiences are left theorizing, and we have a hunch about what her role in the series will be.

Lanterns is the latest DC series from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe: Chapter One – Gods & Monsters, following Creature Commandos and Peacemaker. Read the synopsis below:

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

The Lanterns trailer showed us first looks at lots of things, alien activity, Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), constructs, Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen), but most curiously it showed Laura Linney’s undisclosed character giving John Stewart a pep talk.

Laura Linney Could Be Playing Carol Ferris

I theorize that Laura Linney’s character is Carol Ferris, the long time love interest of Hal Jordan (Chandler). This is mostly based on her age (which is in the same range as Chandler) and her status as an A-list actress. In the comics, Carol is the superhero Star Sapphire.

Continuing this theory, I believe that in the 2026 timeline of the series, John will be forced to investigate either the death or disappearance of Hal and as part of this investigation, Stewart will interrogate Carol Ferris, due to her previous connection with Hal (though I predict they will have broken up by that point, contributing to Hal’s jaded nature).

Though I am unsure of why she would be giving him a pep talk, its possible they had met previously in the 2016 timeline.

Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Nathan Fillion, Ulrich Thomsen, and Laura Linney. The series is set to be released on August 16 on HBO and HBO Max.
