FX Releases Surprise ‘The Bear’ Prequel Special Titled ‘Gary’
‘The Bear’ has surprised drop a prequel episode about Richie and Mikey, titled ‘Gary’.
FX’s flagship series The Bear is set to return for its fifth yearly season, but audiences are don’t have to wait another month to catch up with Berzatto drama as the production company has released a surprise prequel episode out of nowhere.
Titled Gary, the episode serves as a prequel to the first season and features an hour long adventure with Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Mikey (Jon Bernthal) taking a work trip to Gary, Indiana. The news was kept entirely under wraps until it was surprised dropped on Hulu. Read the synopsis below:
Gary follows the two friends’ complicated relationship, uncovering new layers of Mikey’s mental state while offering crucial insight into the man Richie is when audiences first meet him in season 1—adding emotional context that reframes their story from the very beginning.

Whilst Christopher Storer returns as director, the episode is the debut writing credit for both Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal, the latter of which returns to the writing-acting chair with Marvel Special Presentation’s The Punisher: One Last Kill.
It marks the latest in a long line of collaborations between Moss-Bachrach and Bernthal, following The Punisher, Sharp Stick, The Bear, and Dog Day Afternoon.
‘The Bear’ Season 5 Still Doesn’t Have A Release Date, Expected For June
The Bear, the Emmy award juggernaut known for binge releases, still doesn’t have a release date despite being in the can. As part of the reporting cycle for Gary, trade outlets are expecting the fifth season to be released in June, which would mark the fifth consecutive year of releases for the show. Christopher Storer returns to direct, and Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebri, Matty Matheson, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott, and Edwin Lee Gibson, are all expected to return as the team behind the titular restaurant.
