‘Subnautica 2’ Early Access Cinematic Trailer: A Whole New World Of Terrors

Subnautica 2 is the third entry in the long running underwater survival horror franchise. This title follows a group of Alterra employees who find themselves on an all new planet that houses a new array of underwater mysteries and dangers. Read the official synopsis below:

“Driven from your home by ongoing conflict, Alterra offers you the chance at a new life. But as the colony ship CICADA shepherds you and your fellow Pioneers to your new home, something goes awry. The ship’s AI insists that your mission should continue. Stranded and faced with near-insurmountable odds, you must do everything in your power to survive. The future of humanity on this world is in your hands.”

Subnautica 2 was first revealed at the Xbox Partner Preview Event on October 17th, 2024. There, we saw a teaser trailer for the upcoming title which introduced the new planet players will explore as well as confirm the introduction of multiplayer with a second survivor being introduced near the end of the trailer. Moving on to the official store pages, the description teased a new mechanic based around genetics with players seemingly able to modify themselves to adapt to the planet’s environments.

Over the past few weeks, Unknown Worlds hosted a “Subnautica | Dive Into The Legacy” Web Series which featured various members of the community sharing their experiences with the franchise and what the games mean to them. At the end of the final episode, “The Keepers of 4546B”, Unknown Worlds announced that the Cinematic Trailer for Subnautica 2 will launch on April 30th, 2026.

Today marks the release of that Cinematic Trailer, we’ll cover what’s shown in the trailer and when fans can begin playing the Early Access Build. Check out the trailer below:

What Happens In The Subnautica 2 Cinematic Trailer?

The trailer, which lasts for 2 minutes and 4 seconds, opens on the outside of an underwater structure resembling a tower. Three Pioneers are seen entering, one piloting the Tadpole (a new mode of transport) with the other two sitting on its wings. On the inside, a fourth Pioneer is seen trying to dig out a strange artifact, he first uses his pickaxe but it’s ineffective, which leads him to use a sonic blaster. The vibration rattles the tower, emerging from beneath the sands is a creature with sharp teeth that grabs hold of a Pioneer with another chasing after it. An eel-like creature with the ability to shoot spikes from its mouth grabs the third Pioneer. The fourth, unaware of this, turns around to see his crew missing, the eel attacks him and he escapes to the Tadpole and pilots it.

The eel creature attacks the vehicle and a chase sequence commences, the Pioneer manages to get the eel stuck on a rock structure and he escapes to another part of the ocean. The tadpole begins to flash a bright red light, indicating some structural damage, the Pioneer examines it and breathes a sign of relief after escaping the eel. Things go south as he notices eyes opening on the walls surrounding him, they begin to close leading to a narrow escape. We then learn that the Pioneer was in the centre of a giant clam. As he emerges out of the water, the tadpole glides in the air for a moment revealing an aerial creature with a transparent body. The Pioneer manages to land on a piece of land resembling a tentacle, he then notices a giant island in front of him. We cut to an underwater segment, a structure is seen in the distance glowing green. The Early Access Release Date for Subnautica 2 is then shown. The game launches on May 14th, 2026.

When Will Subnautica 2 Launch In Early Access?

Subnautica 2 will launch into Early Access on May 14th at 11:00 AM EDT. The game will be available on PC (Steam and Epic Games) and Xbox Series X|S for $29.99 USD. Please note the Early Access Blog Post states that Subnautica 2’s Early Access will feature regional pricing, “The price will be localized depending on your region, so check your chosen storefront for other currencies.”

Subnautica 2 is developed by Unknown Worlds. The game launches in Early Access for $29.99 USD on PC (Steam and Epic Games) and Xbox Series X|S on May 14th, 2026 at 11:00 AM EDT.
