Paul King To Direct ‘Labubu’ Movie At Sony Pictures

Paul King has become a name synonymous with charming and cute films having directed fan favourites like Paddington, Paddington 2, and Wonka, and now he has his eyes set on another film, this one based off a cute phenomenon, the Labubu. Read the Paul King Labubu movie news below.

In 2025, the Labubu took the world by storm with sales largely driven by memes and brainrot content. The Labubu is a collectible toy, similar to Beanie Babies and Funko Pop! Vinyls. You’d think there wasn’t much there to make a movie from, but regardless, Sony Pictures has greenlit development of a Labubu movie and now the project has a director. It’s a similar move to the Skibidi Toilet movie that is also in development.

Paul King is an obvious choice when it comes to cute and cuddly creatures, as he is, of course, the man who brought Paddington to the big screen and revitalized the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory franchise with Wonka, which saw Hugh Grant play an Oompa Loompa.

He is also currently developing a Prince Charming movie for Disney Studios, starring Chris Hemsworth in the titular role. He is also expected to return for a sequel to Wonka, with Timothée Chalamet returning in the starring role.

Labubu is still in early development so it likely will come after those two films, but Sony is working closely with Labubu rights holder Pop Mart who are putting together the team for the film.
