Mike Flangan blew away audiences with The Life of Chuck this year, flexing some filmmaking muscles audiences thought he didn’t have. Now, following the production of his Carrie adaptation for Prime Video, the director is getting ready to film his The Exorcist film at Blumhouse Productions. Following David Gordon Green’s departure from Blumhouse’s planned trilogy of Exorcist films, beginning with The Exorcist: Believer, Mike Flanagan swept in to develop the remaining two films, whilst abandoning the narrative that Gordon Green had set up. The first of these was meant to premiere in March 2026 but has since been removed from the release calendar as Flanagan presumably has been busy with James Watkins’ Clayface (which he wrote), Chris Stuckmann’s Shelby Oaks (which he produced), and his own Carrie series at Prime Video.
Now, following a set of casting news earlier this year, where we learnt Scarlett Johansson had onboarded the film as lead actress, we have a plot synopsis and title, courtesy of World of Reel’s Jordan Ruimy, an industry insider and journalist. Ruimy reports that the film will be titled The Exorcist: Martyrs, confirming a report from a previous unconfirmed production listing.
What Is The Mike Flanagan Film ‘The Exorcist: Martyrs’ About?
In his report, he also reveals a synopsis that has been making the rounds internally at Blumhouse Productions. He says that the film will follow “a small-town “rookie detective” who takes on a case involving “inconceivable darkness.””
Industry veteran Scarlett Johansson will be playing this small-town rookie detective, and it seems the film will be following a new route in comparison to the other films. Other The Exorcist films, with the first directed by William Friedkin, usually follow a possession and the subsequent exorcism.
Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs stars Scarlett Johansson and is expected to begin production on February 23rd, 2026.
