Celine Song’s ‘Materialists’ Gets Release Date

A24 has dated their next release, Materialists, which stars Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson and sees the return of Celine Song.

Materialists is one of the most anticipated and exciting releases of 2025, all eyes are on Song after the mega success of Past Lives and A24 is clearly confident in this movie as they have now officially announced when the movie will release.

Materialists features a star-studded cast including Chris Evans, Dakota Johnson, and Pedro Pascal, making it an even more exciting follow-up to her critically acclaimed feature debut Past Lives. After proving herself as one of the most exciting new voices in filmmaking with her deeply emotional storytelling and meditative exploration of human relationships, Song now has the opportunity to expand her vision with a film that could have a broader mainstream appeal while still carrying her signature exploration of the human experience and the nuances that come with it.

It’s no surprise that A24 was very eager to work with her again and are probably expecting a similar outpouring, if not a bigger one, for Materialists. They have dated it in a very similar spot to Past Lives. A24 has announced that Materialists will release in cinemas on June 13th, 2025.

The plot for Materialists is as follows: A matchmaker’s lucrative business is complicated when she falls into a toxic love triangle that threatens her clients.

These themes of love and love triangles specifically seem to be very interesting to Song, since this is the core of Past Lives as well. It is even at the forefront of Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, which is written by Celine Song’s husband and Potion Seller Justin Kuritzkes. However, it takes on an entirely new form in this movie as Song is branching out into romcom territory, which is risky as it is more mainstream and seems a lot less personal than the intimacy that made her last film so great, but Song is such an excellent director that faith in the process is warranted.

In an interview with GQ, despite refusing to comment on much surrounding Materialists, producer Christine Vahcon stated that “It feels like she [Celine] makes a different movie every time, that she’s going to be the kind of a filmmaker who doesn’t make the same movie twice.” so there is a lot to look forward to and audiences can expect something very fresh and with Celine at the helm, there is surely going to be a new approach to the romcom genre taken and the film will no doubt turn out to be something unique and very special.

The cast is certainly interesting – Pedro Pascal is a very in-demand actor right now so for him to take the role, it must’ve stood out to him as something worth dedicating his time to and from what we’ve heard, it certainly seems to be the case. His range is exactly what makes him the right actor for this unique mainstream breakout for Song and it will be unsurprising if he comes out as the star of the whole movie.

Conversely, Chris Evans and Dakota Johnson have not seen great success in their recent careers, whilst both are still playing leading roles, it’s for streaming or ‘dump’ movies. They have not truly had the chance to showcase their acting range and Evans has a history in romcoms, with those being his primary genre until his casting in Fantastic Four.

This movie could give them the chance to tap into a more nuanced range that they are not usually given the freedom to express and hopefully they’re up to the task. Given Song’s ability to create deeply affecting narratives, this film could solidify her as one of the most important filmmakers of this generation, elevating her style to a larger audience while maintaining the thoughtful and resonant themes that made Past Lives so beloved.

Everything surrounding this movie is very exciting and we cannot wait to see it when Materialists has its release in cinemas this June
