‘Dune: Messiah’: Jason Momoa Rumoured To Return As Duncan Idaho / Hayt
Jason Momoa is rumoured to return in Denis Villeneuve’s final Dune film, Dune: Messiah, which is set to begin filming this Summer.
Released back in 2021, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune opened to both critical and commercial success with a stellar cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa and more. Similarly, Dune: Part Two opened to both critical and commercial success but had a slightly different cast as Jason Momoa didn’t return but Florence Pugh and Anya Taylor-Joy joined the franchise. Although, It’s looking like Jason Momoa will be returning to the franchise in Dune: Messiah.
The film is expected to begin filming this Summer. It’s also expected for most of the cast from Dune and Dune: Part Two to make a return to this one including Jason Momoa who played Duncan Idaho in the first film. Idaho dies in the first film at the hands of the Sardaukar so non-readers of Dune are probably wondering how Momoa could make a return. In Dune: Messiah the conspirators of Emperor Paul Atreides give him a ghola (or clone) of Duncan Idaho called Hayt as a gift.
Jason Momoa Rumoured To Return In ‘Dune: Messiah’
Film insider Jeff Sneider revealed recently on The Hot Mic that he had heard a rumour Jason Momoa would be returning in Dune: Messiah. Sneider said to take it with a grain of salt but it’s not that surprising considering how involved Momoa’s character is in the plot of the novel.
Sneider also talked about how Momoa could have a possible schedule conflict with Fast X: Part 2 as when it could film is still up in the air. Last November Vin Diesel hinted at a March 2026 date in an Instagram post. Momoa is expected to return in Fast X: Part 2 as the villainous Dante Reyes from Fast X.
With production on Dune: Messiah set to begin in the summer we can expect new casting announcements shortly, including an official confirmation by the trades and/or Denis himself about Jason Momoa’s return.
Regarding the future of the Dune franchise though, Dune: Messiah will mark the final film in the franchise to be directed by Denis Villeneuve as the director wants to work on his own projects afterwards. One of the names being eyed for the franchise for post-Dune: Messiah is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Jurassic World: Rebirth-helmer, Gareth Edwards, as reported by film insider Daniel Richtman.
