New ‘Thunderbolts*’ Trailer Shows off Sentry and The Void
A new trailer for ‘Thunderbolts*’ has been released for the Super Bowl, and it features a lot of new looks at our favourite anti-heroes.
The new Thunderbolts* trailer reaffirms everything we thought we’d love about the movie.
Thunderbolts* is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s most unique and unexpected projects, both visually and thematically. Featuring an all-star cast including but not limited to Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the film brings together a team of morally complex, deeply flawed antiheroes. The tone is notably darker than past MCU films, with a strong emphasis on mental health and the psychological toll of being a “hero.” These aren’t characters basking in glory—they’re broken, searching for purpose, and struggling with their pasts. You can watch the official trailer below:
Visually, Thunderbolts* also sets itself apart, featuring a grounded, grittier aesthetic that leans into espionage and psychological drama more than the usual high-fantasy superhero spectacle. The mysterious new character “Bob,” who Marvel has been carefully keeping under wraps, is all but confirmed to be Sentry, one of the most powerful and complex characters in Marvel Comics. The latest Thunderbolts trailer teases his presence, showing a figure from behind who clearly resembles Sentry’s towering frame, further fueling speculation. Sentry is an incredibly difficult antagonist for the Thunderbolts because he possesses near-godlike strength, flight and a range of unknown abilities that we may get to see in this movie —essentially making him Marvel’s answer to Superman. However, what makes him truly dangerous isn’t just his raw power but his unstable psyche, as he struggles with his dark alter ego, The Void, which could wreak havoc if fully unleashed.

The Void can be clearly seen in the new trailer, meaning that this is going to be a significant aspect of Sentry’s powers that are tapped into. With ideas surrounding mental health and states at the forefront of this movie, it’s unsurprising that Sentry’s struggles with himself and his wellbeing will be what sets the stage for the third act of the movie. This presents a unique challenge for the Thunderbolts, who are not the Avengers and lack the sheer physical strength to overpower someone like Sentry. Instead, the way to defeat him must be more psychological, tapping into the film’s heavy focus on mental health and emotional trauma. The team will likely need to break through to Sentry’s fractured mind rather than engage in a futile physical battle. This approach not only fits the movie’s darker and more introspective tone but also prevents the climax from becoming just another CGI brawl, helping Thunderbolts feel fresh and thematically rich within the MCU.
Set to Starship’s power ballad “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”, the trailer cuts through moments of the Thunderbolts both fighting each other and working as a team, with most highlighting the strong personal bond that seems to be growing between the members. Notably, Yelena seems to be struggling with imposter syndrome and the other members all are down on their luck, with a quick montage showing the sorry state of their lives and how much they are struggling at respective moments of time. But, with a quick pep talk from Red Guardian, who states: “Yelena, when I look at you. I don’t see your mistakes – that’s why we need each other”, the team are reinvigorated and ready to take on Sentry.

If this trailer doesn’t get you excited, then maybe the next one coming in a few months with a full look at Sentry will do it, but Marvel is really putting all of their cards on the table with this one. A mega budget Marvel movie that takes risks with its story and doesn’t play the typical superhero cards – this is going to be interesting. The trailer reaffirms all these pivotal themes and plays them up even more than was originally expected: whilst there is the typical action to enjoy and lots of heroic showcases, it is the dialogue and character work that is being doing here that stands out and seems to be at the forefront – even the trailer was rushing through the action in order to focus on moments between father and daughter and even new relationships like Red Guardian and Bucky.
Whilst Val raises the question “who will keep the American people safe?”, we know who is at least going to keep them entertained – and they’re coming to cinemas May 2nd.
