This animated show is a treat for both long-time Marvel fans and newcomers alike with an exciting cast of characters; some maybe familiar and some brand new. Among the new characters that will debut in this show is Pearl Pangan, popularly known as Wave in Marvel Comics.
To those who are not aware of her, Wave is a powerful and groundbreaking hero in the Marvel Universe who offers fresh new perspectives as one of the first prominent Filipina superhero to take center stage. Before you catch her in action in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, take your time first to explore her origin, abilities and the impact she brought in the comics.
Creation in the Comics
Pearl Pangan made her first appearance in War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1 in 2019 as the Filipina Superheroine known as Wave. She was created by Greg Pak and artist Leinil Yu, with whom he wanted to give the character a feel that will be relatable to Filipino readers and expand Southeast Asia’s presence in the Marvel Universe. The origin story of Pearl is reflective of the realities of growing up in the Philippines and the challenges that young women face in a country that is marked by both natural disasters and political and social issues.
Origin and Background
Pearl Pangan grew up along the beaches of Mactan Islands in Cebu, Philippines, where she developed a strong connection with the waters from an early age. She proved to be a naturally gifted swimmer and an athlete at a young age and was known for her Olympic potential. Despite the bright future awaiting her in the sport, circumstances led her to leave it and at a certain point in her life, was forced to take up a job at a fast-food chain.
It was during that period that a representative from AlonTech approached her, hinting at a mysterious interest in her swimming background. It turned out that AlonTech had learned of Pearl’s good swimming records when she attended high school. AlonTech was, however, unknown to be anything but a legitimate business. It was in reality an evil organization carrying out nefarious activities.
During a violent attack on the AlonTech Lab by the Triumph Division, a group of Philippines’ finest superheroes, Pearl was accidentally drenched into the water and was subjected to some unknown energies emanating from an unknown source. The exposure then gave her powers to control over water. During the ensuing mayhem, Pearl tried to fight off the attackers to the best of her ability using her newfound powers but was eventually overwhelmed and taken out in the skirmish.
Pearl later learned that AlonTech was actually engaged in sinister dealings. Triumph Division saw potential in Pearl offering to welcome and mentor her into the team. With their guidance, she trained to fully master her abilities and adopted the superhero identity “Wave” reflecting both her affinity for water and her personal transformation.
Powers and Abilities
Wave’s main ability is hydrokinesis, or the control and manipulation of water. This ability is manifested in many ways, Wave can draw upon water from the environment surrounding her to create various weaponizations or release it in more destructive forms, like tidal waves or sharply concentrated blasts. Her control over water enables her to change in accordance with changing combat situations and thus makes her versatile and powerful in water.
As a superhero who controls water, Wave is an amphibian and has shown the ability to comfortably speak and breathe underwater. Aside from her water-based powers, Wave also possesses superhuman strength , showing enough raw power to knock out opponents like a Sea Serpent with just a few blows. In addition to her combat skills, Wave also displayed great skill in using her twin blades. Wave’s proficiency in these weapons along with her hydrokinesis made her a dangerous and unpredictable opponent.
As you prepare to watch Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and meet Pearl Pangan, you now know much more about her origins and abilities. Pearl’s inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is important because she represents Filipino culture and brings much-needed diversity to their vast array of superheroes. As part of the larger push of Marvel to create more diverse heroes coming from all parts of Asia, her inclusion in the series would bring much-needed cultural representation on the front line.
Pearl’s Role in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
From the premiere, we learn that Pearl Pangan (Cathy Ang) in this iteration is very different from the one in the comics. Here, she is a fellow student of Rockford Bales High School. She and Peter actually have “history” together as they live in the same apartment complex where Pearl would babysit Peter when May and Ben were out of the house.
Peter would later develop a childhood crush on Pearl and try to ask her out, unfortunately she still sees Peter as a little kid, giving him the nickname “Petey”.
Peter isn’t the only one crushing on Pearl, his best friend Nico Minoru also has a crush on her but the two are out of luck when Pearl starts dating her star quarterback Lonnie Lincoln
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is spearheaded by Jeff Trammell who serves as head writer with Mel Zwyer as supervising director. The series stars Hudson Thames as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, Colman Domingo as Norman Osborn, Cathy Ang as Pearl Pangan, Eugene Byrd as Lonnie Lincoln, Grace Song as Nico Minoru, Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock / Daredevil, and more. Episodes 1 and 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man are now streaming on Disney+.
