Ray Mendoza-Alex Garland A24 Collab ‘Warfare’ Gets First Trailer
The movie, based on Mendoza’s own recollection of his experience in Iraq, hits theatres in 2025.
A star-studded war movie, Warfare follows a group of soldiers in the middle of the Iraq War. From directors Ray Mendoza, hailed as an Iraq veteran by the film’s marketing, and Alex Garland, who is known for Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Men, the film aims to tell a story set on the battlefield of Iraq. Now the Warfare trailer has been released. A description, provided by Deadline Hollywood, reads as follows:
“Warfare embeds audiences with a platoon of U.S. Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, overwatching the movement of U.S. forces through insurgent territory. A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare, told like never before: in real-time and based on the memory of the people who lived it.”
The first trailer for the film sees our cast inside a dimly lit home, surveilling danger and attempting to enact their mission. Garland’s previous film, Civil War, also for A24, was mostly well-regarded but when it came to the film’s politics or lack thereof, it copped quite a bit of backlash. It seems Garland, along with now co-director and then military film supervisor Ray Mendoza, is doubling down on that controversy, with the Iraq War being one of the most controversial wars (or more controversial than your typical war), often facing backlash over the treatment of citizens in these warzones at the hands of alien operatives.
Warfare boasts an impressive ensemble, starring some of the biggest upcoming names in today’s cinematic landscape including the likes of D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), Charles Melton (May December), Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Joseph Quinn (The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Gladiator II), Kit Connor (Heartstopper, The Wild Robot), Cosmo Jarvis (Shogun), Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3., The Bear), and many more.
Warfare is expected to be released in 2025 courtesy of A24. The film is only part of what seems to be a big year for Alex Garland, with the release of 28 Years Later, based on a script by Garland, scheduled for the Summer.
