‘Wonder Woman’ Game Cancelled Amid Monolith Productions Shutdown

Wonder Woman fans today are heartbroken with the announcement that the Wonder Woman game will no longer be developed. First announced in 2021, development on the game has been worn thin and news far and few. Now the game is no more, with Warner Bros restructuring its gaming division, shutting down three of its biggest studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. Find out why the Wonder Woman game is cancelled below.

Monolith Productions is, or rather was, best known for its Lord of the Rings games: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The studio also developed a game engine, LithTech, which was comparable to the Quake and Unreal engines. Further, the studio also was credited with the groundbreaking Nemesis System, a program that would track your interactions with enemies, allowing your NPC foes to gain power and ranks within their factions etc., in turn facing unique opponents. Due to the company shut down, many gaming enthusiasts have been up in arms regarding the possible loss of this system, but fans can rest easy as Warner Bros. will still hold the rights to the patent, at least until 2036.

Speaking of the Nemesis System, Wonder Woman would have utilized the mechanic, seemingly with its henchmen characters. Not much was known about the game, but it would have revolved around the famous Amazonian as she completed heroic acts. A spokesperson for Warner Bros. Games stated the following:

Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities. This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games.

Also being canned is Player First Games, the studio behind the platform fighter Multiversus, which also ceased operations late last year. That game pitted Warner Bros characters against each other in the vein of Super Smash Bros. It saw IP characters like Batman, Shaggy Rogers, Superman, Bugs Bunny, Agent Smith, Arya Stark, Iron Giant, Marceline the Vampire Queen, and LeBron James (for his role in Space Jam: A New Legacy) face off in arena styled battles.

The reason for all these cancellations has been put down to Warner Bros. Games shifting its focus more onto its stronger IPs, including the likes of Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Harry Potter. The company has found success in Hogwarts Legacy, a prequel to the Harry Potter films, and of course the ongoing Mortal Kombat franchise, which releases games to this day.
