Tolkien heads get ready for a big blow, with Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum now moving a full year from its initial December 2026 release date. Read more about The Hunt For Gollum being delayed to 2027.

Following the release of Rings of Power S2 on Prime and New Line Cinemas’ anime-inspired take on the War of the Rohirrim, fans of Peter Jackson’s Middle-Earth are now turning their eyes to Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a feature that promises to bridge a big gap in Tolkien lore.

Directed by franchise heavy hitter Andy Serkis, the film may be adapting a story seen in the Fellowship of the Ring book. While not confirmed, the story in the source material revolves around Gandalf, who upon researching The One Ring, recruits Aragorn to find Gollum to learn more about the Ring’s whereabouts. It is, to date, the only story in Tolkien’s works that revolves around a hunt for Gollum, leading audiences to exercise certainty in the project adapting the chapter.

In a new interview, via entertainment outlet The Direct, at Fan Expo Vancouver 2025, Andy Serkis spilled on a quiet delay, stating that the film has moved a whole year from its previous date:

‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Delayed A Full Year, Moving To 2027

“Yeah, it is not 2026. It was originally going to be December 2026. It is going to be December 2027.”

The director and star also gave an update about its production schedule, stating “We are right at the beginning of the writing process. We will be prepping later this year. Prep takes a good chunk of time, six or seven months, and then we will be shooting next year. So, it backs into that December 2027 release date.”

It’s sad news for Lord of the Rings fans, but rest assured updates will be coming soon, with Sir Ian McKellen previously expressing that he has been contacted in regards to reprising his role as Gandalf, and Viggo Mortensen being open to returning as Aragorn. Lord of the Rings fans will next be treated to Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power season 3, which was just greenlit by Prime Video.
