‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Trailer: We’re Going To Space!
Mario and friends are going on a galactic adventure in the next entry of the film franchise. Check out the trailer below.
Illumination and Nintendo are teaming up yet again for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, for which the trailer was released today. It is the sequel to the The Super Mario Bros. Movie. A widely successful film that hit numerous milestones, such as being the highest-grossing film based on a video game and becoming the first film based on a video game to gross over $1 billion. The sequel (at the time referred to as The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2) was announced back in March 2024, almost a year after the first film’s premiere. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic would return to direct the sequel with Matthew Fogel handling the script. The film was also dated for an April 3, 2026 release.
Fast forward almost two years later and Nintendo announces a Nintendo Direct for September 12th, 2025, a day before Mario’s 40th Anniversary. This direct opened with a roster of Mario 40th Anniversary announcements presented by Shigeru Miyamoto, who would eventually showcase the trailer which you can view below:
What Happens in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer?

The trailer opens with Mario (Chris Pratt) taking a nap under a tree, the Mushroom Kingdom is seen far in the background. The camera begins to follow a yellow butterfly who flies above a field of flowers, a Monty Mole pops out of the ground before burrowing and hitting their head on a rock. The butterfly continues on to a lake, a number of Cheep Cheeps are swimming in the lake while a Toad is fishing by a dock while two other Toads are fishing in a boat.
The Butterfly arrives at the Mushroom Kingdom flying upwards. We see the stained glass mural of Princess Peach. The butterfly keeps going, flying past the clouds. In space the logo for the film is shown, the butterfly sits on the letter “M” in Mario. A Luma appears and says “Let’s a Go!” and flies away before the trailer ends.
What Else To Know about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

The first film ended with the Mario Brothers stopping Bowser (Jack Black) from destroying Brooklyn. We see that the duo now reside in the Mushroom Kingdom which is touched upon in the teaser by Mario napping under the Tree. Bowser on the other hand, is currently imprisoned inside the Kingdom.
Back in the Brooklyn sewers, an egg containing a green Yoshi hatches, meaning that one of Mario’s companions is on their way.
As the name implies, the film will center around the Mario Galaxy series of games. While Rosalina is likely to appear, no casting was announced at the direct.
Finally, during the Nintendo Direct, it was confirmed that Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson will all reprise their roles in the upcoming film.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. The film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, and more. The film hits theatres on April 3rd, 2026.
