‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ Starts Filming

Production on the fifth entry in the live-action Sonic Universe has begun.

Where we last left off, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and his friends Tails (Colleen O’Shaugnessey), Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Shadow (Keanu Reeves) worked together to stop Gerald Robotnik’s (Jim Carrey) plan to destroy Earth using The Eclipse Cannon.

At the end of the film Sonic, Knuckles and Tails finally got to race each other but as we see in the first post-credit scene, Sonic’s immense speed causes him to end up in a secluded part of the New York State Park. At the park, Sonic runs into a metal version of himself, Metal Sonic who resembles the design of his game counterpart. Sonic punches Metal Sonic but is immediately surrounded by a group of them, as the Metal Sonics get ready to attack, a flying hammer radiating pink energy destroys every one saving Sonic in the process. A hooded figure catches the hammer and lands right in front of Sonic, the figure removes their hood, revealing themselves as Amy Rose. The second post-credit scene is much shorter, it shows one of Shadow’s limiter rings. We then see Shadow’s boots enter the frame, confirming that he’s alive after seemingly sacrificing himself to move the Space Colony ARK away from Earth.

Yesterday, Jeff Fowler, director of all the Sonic the Hedgehog films, went to Twitter to announce that production has begun on Sonic the Hedgehog 4 with the caption:

“Ready 4 Action 🎬

#SonicMovie4 now filming.

In Theaters Worldwide March 2027”

In the image, Jeff is seen holding Amy Rose’s hammer, and in the centre of the image, the number 4 is shown glowing pink.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 was announced on December 19th, 2024, just a day before the third film hit theatres which showed that Paramount was confident in the success of the third film. Jeff Fowler and producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara would all return to work on the film. It was later announced that the film would hit theatres on March 19th, 2027. A little under two weeks before production began, it was also confirmed that Kristen Bell will voice Amy Rose in the upcoming film.

Kristen Bell, 45, is an American actress and singer best known for her roles as Anna in Disney’s Frozen films and most recently as Joanne in Netflix’s Nobody Wants This.

Filming for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ran from September 2023 until March 2024 and Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will likely follow a similar timeline. An Untitled Sonic Event Film is also scheduled for a December 22nd, 2028 release.

Plot details are under wraps however with the introduction of Metal Sonic and Amy Rose, it seems that the fourth film will adapt the 1993 game, Sonic CD (Sonic The Hedgehog CD) which is the first introduction of the two characters and follows Sonic as he stops Doctor Robotnik from getting his hands on the Time Stones, seven gemstones that allow the user to control time. The Time Stones are located in various zones on an extraterrestrial body known as Little Planet. Little Planet contains temporal passages which Eggman uses to travel to the past and ensure a future where Eggman rules.

With Eggman seemingly gone, it’s unclear how the film will differ from the games, perhaps Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) could step in to fill the role or someone else entirely.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is directed by Jeff Fowler and stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Kristen Bell as Amy Rose, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, and more. The film hits theatres on March 19th, 2027.
