Sean Penn Reportedly Receiving Early Oscar Buzz For Paul Thomas Anderson’s Next Film
Two time-Academy Award winner, Sean Penn, is reportedly receiving very early Oscar Buzz for his role as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another’.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film, seemingly titled One Battle After Another screened last Thursday which has had audiences raving about the performance Sean Penn gives in it, some even suggesting an Oscar is on the table. The action film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall and Sean Penn, is also said to have clocked in at 170 minutes.
What is Paul Thomas Anderson’s Next Film About?
Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film is reported to be a contemporary adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland, which is set in northern California in the midst of the Reaganite/Orwellian year of 1984 and at its core is a father-daughter story. Some new details have emerged recently about the crime thriller, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall and Sean Penn, as the film had a test screening last Thursday in Phoenix with Anderson himself in attendance.
The film, which is said to be titled One Battle After Another, is described as an action-packed comedy which goes from one big elaborate action set-piece after another with “lots of stunts and car chases” including a phenomenal car chase and is “the closest we’ll ever get” to a full-on Anderson action film. It has also been described as Anderson’s most mainstream film to date and that it’s not anything like his last Pynchon novel adaptation Inherent Vice.
It is said that Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn both deliver great performances as Ghetto Pat and Col. Steven J. Lockjaw respectively; but Penn is reported to be the real highlight of the film who, sporting a grey-ish buzzcut, plays a white supremacist who is described as a great villain that will be giving the audience some real nightmares. The film follows Lockjaw’s hunt for Teyana Taylor’s character after she leaves him so she can be with Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Bob, who goes by Ghetto Pat.

Industry insider Kris Tapley has revealed recently that an Oscar-nominated filmmaker has high hopes for Penn’s award chances, claiming that the actor is going to win another Oscar for his role as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw in One Battle After Another.
With what we know about Penn’s character in the movie and versatility that is showcased within the description alone, as well as him previously showing us some great acting performances in films such as 21 Grams, The Thin Red Line and Mystic River as he’s also collaborated with Anderson before in Licorice Pizza where he gave a widely praised performance.
It’s unknown who the unnamed Oscar-nominated filmmaker could be, but one could speculate that it’s The Brutalist director and writer, Brady Corbet, whose Best Picture Oscar-nominated film has been compared to some of Anderson’s previous films such as There Will Be Blood and The Master.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s action-packed crime-thriller-comedy One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti, Benicio del Toro, Teyana Taylor and Alana Haim is set to release in theaters on August 8th.
