Robert Eggers’ Next Film ‘Werwulf’ Releasing December 2026
Director Robert Eggers has set his next film, Werwulf, once again reteaming with Focus Features for a December 2026 release.
With the release of Robert Eggers’ fourth film, Nosferatu, to critical and commercial acclaim, it was only a matter of time until his fifth feature was greenlit. In an announcement, it was revealed Focus Features will reteam with Eggers for a fifth time for Werwulf, which has reportedly already been written.
Eggers and Norwegian writer Sjón have teamed up to write the script for the film, which will reportedly be a werewolf tale set in the 13th century. There aren’t a lot of details available but the film will be set in England and has been written in Old English to match the time period. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the film was intended to be shot in black and white, but that plan has since changed. Could it be that the film will be shot in colour but utilizes a largely black and white colour palette like its predecessor Nosferatu?

Eggers and Sjón last collaborated on The Northman, also for Focus Features, which was a viking tale of revenge that starred Alexander Skarsgård, Ethan Hawke, and frequent collaborators Anya Taylor Joy and Willem Dafoe. That film was set in the eighth and ninth centuries, being the earliest time period that the filmmaker has tackled. The duo are reportedly set to collaborate on a revival of Labyrinth, which originally starred David Bowie and is reportedly in the process of being revived by Sony Pictures.
The Werwulf announcement comes after the release of another Werewolf movie from Universal, particularly their Blumhouse production company, Wolf Man. That film treated its wolf ailment more as a disease than a curse, so it’s interesting to see just how deep into the lore around lycanthropy Eggers goes, considering his past repertoire of research and adaptations, with his writing style being more similar to a historian than an actual writer.

Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus will executive produce the film, while director Eggers and Sjón will serve as producers. The film is due out on Christmas Day, 2026, exactly two years after the release of Nosferatu.
