The third episode opens with the caption “Three Years Ago” outside of a gray house. We see Emilia Harcourt waking up, Rick Flag Jr (Joel Kinnaman) is asleep on the bed. Rick says “Hey. Come back to bed,” Emilia responds, “I have to get ready for work, Rick. So do you.” He says, “Don’t remind me.” Emilia responds, “You ship out today. You should really be with June.” The conversation continues, and Rick brings up that June is a sorceress, which points to her being June Moone / Enchantress, who first appeared in Suicide Squad (2016). This implies that some events of that film could be canon given that Rick and June have met each other in a romantic capacity. However, it seems the Enchantress was not defeated, opening the doors for her to return to the DCU.

As the conversation continues, we learn that Rick and Emilia aren’t official due to the two not wanting to ruin their friendship. The scene is also shown to be set very closely timeline-wise to The Suicide Squad as Emilia mentions that Rick ships out to Corto Maltese in two hours. The opening ends with flashbacks of Task Force X getting annihilated in Corto Maltese as well as Rick’s fight with Peacemaker. The line “Peacemaker, what a joke” is repeated.

This line was previously a big turning point for Peacemaker as it points out the hypocrisy of his name:a person who strives for “peace” is willing to turn on his own morals to hide the dark truth of Project Starfish.
