‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’ Finale Hints ‘Mindhunter’ Season 3 Could Be Coming

The third season of Ryan Murphy’s Monster series, The Ed Gein Story, crosses over with the Mindhunter story in a peculiar way.

The highly controversial Monster series, from showrunner and producer Ryan Murphy, is back for a third season. This time, focusing on one of the first “celebrity” serial killers, Ed Gein (Charlie Hunnam). Over the course of the season, his story is told, interspersed with retellings of the making of Alfred Hitchcock’s (Tom Hollander) Psycho and Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

The show takes an interesting turn in the final episode, focusing on the killers inspired by Gein instead of filmmakers like the rest of the season did. Even more interestingly, the series takes a route that connects with another Netflix series, the legendary Mindhunter, produced by David Fincher. That series was cancelled after two seasons due to high production costs.

In Monster: The Ed Gein Story episode 8, titled “The Godfather”, the episode opens with infamous serial killer Ted Bundy capturing and killing two women. The episode then follows FBI Investigators John Douglas and Robert Ressler following their creation of the Behavioural Science Unit and their journey into criminal profiling, looking for the then-unidentified killer.

Interestingly, the Mindhunter series follows exactly this, two agents who work under this unit. The comparisons don’t stop there, with the two agents, who bear a striking resemblance to Jonathan Groff’s Holden Ford and Holt McCallany’s Bill Tench, interview Jerry Brudos (Happy Anderson), the Shoe Fetish Slayer. Anderson also plays Brudos in Mindhunter. The exact events that occur in this episode occur in season one episode seven of Mindhunter, where Holden and Bill interview the same killer.

An office scene follows, featuring Ann Burgess who is a psychology professor, just like in Mindhunter. In addition to this, Richard Speck also appears, although is not interviewed by the Mindhunter trio, and is played by Jack Erdie, the same actor who played the role in Mindhunter.

It is clear that Netflix is breathing new life into the Mindhunter series, putting their story into one of the most popular true crime narrative series on Netflix.

This comes right after Bill Tench actor Holt McCallany recently commented on the Mindhunter series being revived as a trilogy of two hour long feature films.
