During the Creature Commandos panel at New York Comic Con, DC Studios co-head James Gunn revealed that four new actors have joined the series and the DCU, including Michael Rooker, Linda Cardellini and more.
The first DC Universe project is right around the corner, with now releasing two trailers and appearing at New York Comic Con where the series held an interactive walkthrough experience and a dedicated panel. At this panel, it was revealed by James Gunn that some of his regular collaborators will be joining the universe in DC Studios’ Creature Commandos.
The actors officially joining the cast are Michael Rooker, Linda Cardellini, Gregg Henry, Peter Serafinowicz, and Benjamin Byron Davis. All actors have previously worked with James Gunn in various capacities.
Rooker is best known for his portrayal of Merle Dixon in The Walking Dead, as well as his collaborations with Gunn where he was featured as Yondu Udonta in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and as Savant in The Suicide Squad. Cardellini is best known as Velma Dinkley in the original Scooby-Doo live-action films, where she collaborated with James Gunn who worked on the script. She has since gone on to appear as Lylla in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Gregg Henry appeared in all three Guardians of the Galaxy films as Peter Quill’s Grandpa. He also appeared in James Gunn’s Slither as Jack MacReady, Super as Detective Felkner, and in the Gunn-produced The Belko Experiment as The Voice. Here Gregg Henry will be playing the role of Nina’s (Zoe Chao) father, who we shall dub Mr Mazursky. Peter Serafinowicz is yet again, a past Gunn collaborator, having worked with the director on Guardians of the Galaxy, where he played Denerian Saal. Last but not least, Benjamin Byron Davis is a voice actor who has also worked with Gunn, specifically as Bletelsnort in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and as Antonia Fowler in The Belko Experiment. He is best known for his role as Dutch van der Linde in the Red Dead Redemption games. It is possible he will be playing Rupert Thorne, a character that appears in the second trailer that bears a striking resemblance to the actor.
While is it unknown who most of these actors will be voicing in the upcoming animated series, it can be theorised that Rooker at least will not be returning as Savant given that he died in The Suicide Squad. While The Suicide Squad’s canonicity has not been discussed, the show does continue loose plot threads between Amanda Waller, the banning of human operatives in Task Force X, and the plot of the second season of Peacemaker. That as it may be, James Gunn has commented on retconning the canon of Peacemaker for the new universe.
Creature Commandos stars Viola Davis, Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Indira Varma, Zoe Chao, Alan Tudyk, Sean Gunn, Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Michael Rooker, Linda Cardellini, Gregg Henry, Peter Serafinowicz, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The series begins streaming on Max on December 5th.
