In a big week for DC news, a new report alleges that a big Italian filmmaker will be handed the reins on a new DC Studios movie. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, of The InSneider, James Gunn and Peter Safran have been courting Luca Guadagnino for a new DC project.

The move makes sense, given the acclaim Guadagnino has garnered in recent years, having directed Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All, Challengers and the upcoming Queer. Gunn and Safran have previously been rumoured to grab other well-known and acclaimed directors such as Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan) and Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House). So if true, this may fit the status quo.

To add to this, Matthew W. of Nexus Point News exclusively reported that Guadagnino has been attached to an adaptation of Sgt. Rock. The report alleges Guadagnino will direct a WW2 period piece adaptation of the character, with writer Justin Kuritzkes coming along to helm the script. Kuritzkes most recently wrote Guadagnino’s Challengers and Queer, with the latter expected to be a frontrunner for several Academy Awards. r/DCULeaks previously reported back in February ‘24 that a Sgt. Rock project was in development

Sgt. Rock is a DC character with no superhuman abilities instead being incredibly skilled in his field of work. The character is a soldier, who leads the Easy Company unit, a rugged group of infantry often placed in challenging combat situations. Movies for the character have previously been in the works, with huge action stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger attached to star, but all previous adaptations have fallen through.

Up next for Guadagnino is Queer, which just premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The movie stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey. Guadagnino is then slated to direct After the Hunt, which is currently in post-production and stars Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Chloë Sevigny.
