Leo Woodall In Talks For ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Role

As production ramps up for the next film in the Lord of the Rings series, the rumor mill is spinning for potential castings.

It has been years since Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum was announced and now that Andy Serkis is done with Animal Farm, the director and actor is moving on to the eighth instalment in Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth series. Set for a December 2027 release date, the film is eagerly moving towards production with the movie now deep in the casting phase. Of course, reprisal roles such as Gollum, Frodo and Gandalf have already been filled, with Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen returning as their respective characters, but now eyes are towards characters who can’t have their actors return, or are yet to make their live-action debut.

Insider DanielRPK has revealed that Leo Woodall is in talks for a key role in the film, with many theorizing he may be stepping into Viggo Mortensen’s shoes to play Aragorn a.k.a. Strider. While not confirmed, Viggo’s involvement in the film is shaky at best, with him expressing openness to return as long as the story needed to be told.

The story? Rumour has it that the film taking place in the period following Bilbo Baggins’ (Ian Holm) 111th birthday and before Frodo’s departure for Rivendell, where he meets the wandering Aragorn on the way. That period sees Gandalf employ Aragorn in search for Gollum to learn information about The One Ring (which at that time remains in Bilbo’s possession).

So if this character Woodall is in talks for does indeed take part of Gandalf’s hunt for Gollum, it is certainly possible he plays Aragorn, but we can’t rule out him playing another character, as this period isn’t exactly fleshed out in Tolkien’s original novels.

Woodall is best known for his roles in The White Lotus and Cherry, but recently continued his breakout with Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy and Nuremberg, where he shared scenes with Rami Malek and Russell Crowe.

Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum stars Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen, and Elijah Wood. The film is produced by New Line Cinema for Warner Bros. Discovery and is set to be released in December 2027.
