Following a report last month that detailed the production date for HBO’s Lanterns, a new collection of reports are currently making the rounds on the internet, this time about casting for one of the show’s two leads, Green Lantern Hal Jordan.

Yesterday, Matthew W. of Nexus Point News published a report alleging that Josh Brolin has been offered the role of Hal Jordan in the series. Brolin, 56, is best known for his role as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Llewelyn Moss in No Country for Old Men, and Gurney Halleck in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films. Although the series was casting in a younger age bracket than this (between the ages of 45 and 55), Brolin’s offer has been corroborated by other industry insiders including Jeff Sneider and ViewerAnon

And now today, Jeff Sneider further corroborated this report, but this time including the second and third ideal offers for the character. As a direct runner-up to Brolin, Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey is the next in line. McConaughey starred in True Detective Season 1, the series James Gunn and Peter Safran are modelling Lanterns on, coincidentally also produced by HBO. In that series, he played Rust Cohle, a pessimistic detective obsessed with taking down the serial killer responsible for a string of murders.

Third in line for the role is Obi-Wan Kenobi himself, Ewan McGregor. Ewan McGregor is best known for his role as a young Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, as well as his roles in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting and Tim Burton’s Big Fish. These latter two actors fall in the casting age range, with the two being 54 and 53 respectively.

Hal Jordan’s character in the series is described to be a Green Lantern legend and a somewhat mentor figure to partner Jon Stewart as the duo investigates a mystery in the American heartland. Lanterns is currently in its casting phase. The series is in development at HBO by DC Studios and has had eight episodes ordered.
