The Guardians of the Universe, also known as the Templar Guardians, were created by John Broome and Gil Kane after the initial concept by Julius Schwartz. They first appeared in 1960’s Green Lantern (Volume 2) #1.

The Guardians are tasked with bringing order to the universe by any means necessary, as a result they were responsible for the creation groups such as the Manhunters and Third Army. Their most successful attempt at peacekeeping was the creation of the Green Lanterns. While the Guardians were born on the planet Maltus, they chose Oa to house the Central Power Battery for their lanterns.
