David Fincher has built a strong partnership with Netflix over the years, consistently bringing his projects to the streaming giant and helping establish it as a home for prestige cinema. From his series Mindhunter and feature films like Mank and The Killer, Fincher has proven to be one of Netflix’s most valued filmmakers.

Recently, he signed an exclusivity deal and has even been tipped to direct an American remake of their hit series Squid Game.

According to The Playlist, Netflix bought the script for the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel from Tarantino for $20 million and will now develop it with Brad Pitt and David Fincher. It makes sense for Tarantino to work with Netflix again, after he clearly proved his admiration for them by giving them permission to release the extended streaming version of The Hateful Eight.

Afterwards, it was added by TheInsneider that Leondardo DiCaprio would also return for the sequel, meaning a reunion between the two mains would occur.

Fincher’s decision to helm a Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel for the platform cements this relationship and proves his loyalty and plan to work with Netflix for a long time – he must be treated very well. By bringing such a hot package to them, he clearly wants to strengthen this relationship and solidify himself as the Netflix filmmaker.

This sequel, based on a script by Quentin Tarantino, marks an intriguing collaboration between two of the most distinct directors of modern cinema. While Tarantino’s original Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was a sun-soaked, revisionist love letter to 1969 Hollywood, Fincher’s meticulous, darker style could offer a fresh perspective on the world of Cliff Booth and Rick Dalton. Brad Pitt reprising his role as the enigmatic stuntman is another major draw, given that his performance in the first film won him an Oscar and Leo is, well, Leo.

The Playlist further reports that the script is based on the original script Tarantino wrote for his final movie, The Movie Critic. Clearly, Tarantino wants to focus on an original movie for his final one and so was happy to let Fincher take the reins on this planned sequel.

It is also claimed that the movie will begin shooting in July in California, with a budget of around $200 million.

This move speaks to Netflix’s strategy of securing major talent and developing prestige projects to compete with traditional studios. By backing Fincher’s take on Tarantino’s world, they’re betting on a film that will attract cinephiles and add another high-profile title to their growing collection of auteur-driven films. Whether Fincher brings a more character-study type movie or a gritty Hollywood drama, his involvement guarantees that this won’t just be a standard sequel—it’ll be a film event.
