In a recent interview with BBC, Twisters star, Daisy Edgar Jones, when asked if she would ever revisit her Normal People character Marianne, said that it would be wonderful to explore again.
Normal People is a show produced by BBC and Hulu based on the book of the same name. The show follows Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal) through different points in their young lives. The original series was a miniseries that consisted of 12 episodes.
Normal People was adored by fans for the realism it portrayed of upbringings, relationships, grief, and connection, which made it a treat to watch. It portrayed a fantastic journey for these two characters through so much. Both protagonists felt like three-dimensional characters with aspects you love about them but they had real character flaws that made them feel like real characters.
Perhaps the most significant contribution the show made was blowing up the careers of both Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Daisy is currently promoting Twisters, the blockbuster legacy sequel to Twister, while Paul Mescal has his own legacy sequel with Gladiator 2 later this year.
When asked if she would like to do more Normal People, Daisy seemed enthused by the idea.
“I love those characters… It would be wonderful to explore them again… Normal People was a series that was such a lockdown phenomenon. I think it introduced Paul and I to a lot of people and film-makers.”
While there isn’t a sequel book of sorts for the show, the show had the original author, Sally Rooney, writing the series so it’s entirely possible that there would be no need for another book. Daisy adds that if the author is down to write more of the show then she will be open to it.
“If Rooney is up for writing a new story, who knows…Keeping it open. Always open”
What would a season 2 look like? Well, it’s hard to know what the plot may be. The first season ends with Connell soon to leave for New York for a MFA in a Creative Writing program while Marianne decides to stay in Dublin and continue her life there.
The original season is about their ups and downs and their decisions show how far they’ve come, how much their relationship has matured. Season 2 should develop that maturity further.
I’d love to see the series take shape over a similarly long period of time delving deeper into their adulthood. Perhaps take inspiration from Richard Linklater’s Before Trilogy and continue the series that way every five or ten years or so. It would be a perfect way to continue the series in my opinion.
