‘Axe Ghost’ Review: Quite The Challenge
The game proves to be quite enjoyable but it takes a while to master due to how challenging it becomes.
Card Games is definitely a genre I’ve struggled to get into as of late. The last time I was truly hooked was during my Marvel Snap phase where I played hours on end. Once that phase ended, I could never find another game that caught my interest, everything else felt too slow to me and I ended up just swapping to collecting cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket. I do want to start off by saying that Axe Ghost did not change this feeling but it’s definitely given me quite an addictive challenge.
Axe Ghost is a turn-based spatial battler where players are required to clear rows of enemies to make their way to the boss. Players are given cards with various effects to help clear the enemies. The game features occasional quests to boost your score multiplier, which helps to climb the daily leaderboard.
I’m proud to report that the game doesn’t have any bugs, the game performs well with the only exception being the initial loading time which I found often freezes and takes much longer than it should. But once the loading time is over, we’re right into the game with seamless navigation.

I really enjoyed the tutorial for the game, not only did we take our time going over each type of effect, but there was a huge emphasis on giving players detailed descriptions and animations to show how each function. I also appreciated the NPC who we were able to clear any doubts with by selecting the text response options. I will say that I initially couldn’t find any tutorials on how the special effects that randomly generate for the daily challenge operate but again, the descriptions helped.
I will admit the game does feel a bit lacking due to the only game mode being the daily challenge. Perhaps in the future a campaign mode could be added to help players experience the mechanics even more because I will admit this game is pretty difficult. I found myself struggling a lot with the daily challenges but I’m determined to figure it out and complete it one day. Clearing out the monsters also feels very satisfying to accomplish which keeps me coming back.

There’s not much else to say about the game. I would however, like cosmetics for the ghost. I think getting a hat themed around each achievement which your ghost can wear will feel a bit more fulfilling for the players, especially those like myself who have some difficulty climbing the leaderboard.
Overall, Axe Ghost is a fun, fast-paced experience that doesn’t feel like a chore to play. The daily challenges manage to keep things fresh and the leaderboard invokes the competitive spirit in me. The game also performs pretty flawlessly, minus the loading time that I addressed earlier.

Axe Ghost is developed by Tomasz Kaye, the game is available on Steam for $9.99 USD.
