Following the casting of Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan in Lanterns, he will soon be joined by John Stewart, played by either Aaron Pierre or Stephan James.
A new report from Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter gives us our first big news on the casting of John Stewart. As the series enters its final stages of casting, the shortlist for the DC character John Stewart is reportedly down to a list of two.
Both Aaron Pierre and Stephan James are in contention for the role of John Stewart, a character that will be mentored by Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan in the series. Pierre is coming off a critical success with Netflix’s Rebel Ridge as well as M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, while James is best known for The Piano Lesson, which has been a hot topic in this year’s awards conversation.
While these talks haven’t been finalised, THR reports that these conversations may conclude by the end of the weekend, thus moving the casting process towards supporting characters.
The character of Stewart was created by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams, and first appeared in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #87 in December 1971. The character is an important one, being the first African-American superhero in DC Comics history.
Lanterns is created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, and is executive produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The series currently has an 8-episode order at HBO and will stream on Max.
