‘A Minecraft Movie’ Post-Credits Scenes Explained

A Minecraft Movie is now rolling out across the world, and fans are raving, though critics aren’t exactly feeling the same, as the movie currently boasts a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

With a projected domestic opening weekend of $60 million and a worldwide opening of $120 million, a lot of fans are going to be jumping into the audience for this one, and so if you find yourself watching A Minecraft Movie and feeling a bit confused after those post-credit scenes – don’t worry, we’re here to explain it for you.

Of course, there are spoilers in this article, so do not read ahead if you haven’t seen the movie yet.

The first post-credits scene sees Jennifer Coolidge’s character, Vice Principal Marlene, preparing a meal for her new villager partner, who stumbled through the portal to the Overworld and happened to find love when hit by Marlene’s car. Just as they are settling in together, Marlene’s ex-husband, played by Hiram Garcia, slams the door and comes into their house, looking to take Marlene back.

Of course, her new villager partner can’t have this, and for the first time in the movie, we hear him speaking English, and rather eloquently at that, as opposed to the iconic grunts. He stands his ground and speaks of how happy he is with Marlene, essentially telling her ex-husband to back off and leave her alone. 

In response, Marlene replies in villager grunts, in a humorous exchange that sees them swap their ways of communication, which is made funnier by the reveal that it has only been a day since they met – a lot has happened since then!

The second post-credits scene takes place after the ending of the movie, which sees all of the characters returning back to the real world and after some contemplation, Steve joining them as well. 

We follow him as he walks back the path to his original earthly home, and when he knocks on the door, he is greeted by a stranger who now lives in his house. A woman with red hair and a green shirt answers the door, introducing herself as Alex, the second default player avatar introduced in the Minecraft game. She is introduced in a very ‘MCU’-like style, implying that she will probably return for the sequel and play a big part in it.

She also mentions an old chest left in the attic, implying that she has looked through it already and may know something about the Overworld or the world of ‘Minecraft’. Granted, if a wolf/dog and a villager could get through the portal, who knows what else managed to get through and the world is aware of now. 

Considering the game doesn’t have a concrete lore or narrative, it’s hard to tell how Alex will fit into the future of this franchise or what the plans for a sequel would even be, but after the success this movie is predicted to get and the large volumes of attention the film has attracted online, there is no doubt that Warner Bros. will be looking to greenlight a few more Minecraft movies.

A Minecraft Movie is directed by Jared Hess and stars Jason Momoa, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Jack Black. The film hit theatres on April 4th, 2025.
