‘A Minecraft Movie’ Gets Runtime Update (Exclusive)
We finally have an idea on the runtime for Minecraft’s debut on the big screen, and it’s just about as you’d expect.
A Minecraft Movie has been a long time coming, with its development spanning nearly a decade since it was first announced in 2014. Warner Bros. has worked through various creative challenges, including multiple script iterations and director visions, very similarly to Blumhouse Productions’ Five Nights At Freddy’s, in order to adapt the immensely popular sandbox video game into a cinematic experience. Directed by Jared Hess, the movie features a high-profile cast, including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge, highlighting that the movie will undoubtedly feature a heavy blend of humor and adventure.
When the first teaser trailer debuted in late 2024, fan reactions were divided. The mix of live-action and CGI raised eyebrows, with some fans critiquing its aesthetic and how it depicted the game’s iconic blocky style. Key elements, such as the inclusion of pink sheep and interpretations of classic Minecraft characters, sparked lively discussions related to the extent to which the movie should adapt iconic fan-created memes and theories versus crafting its own story and roster of characters. Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft who is better known as ‘Notch’, gave his approval, calling the trailer “weird but intriguing”. The second trailer released later in the year received a warmer reception, with audiences beginning to embrace the film’s unique approach, but still not enough, as the trailers and featurettes for the film reportedly have double the amount of dislikes to likes on YouTube, as well as negative discourse following the film in all conversations on social media.
As its release gets closer, A Minecraft Movie is generating significant excitement in spite of the overwhelmingly negative word on social media, especially among dedicated fans curious to see how the game’s limitless creativity and world-building translate to the big screen. Warner Bros.’ effort to balance faithful representation of the game with cinematic storytelling highlights the potential of this adaptation to resonate with audiences of all ages, bridging the gap between gaming culture and mainstream cinema.
We can officially confirm that the current runtime for A Minecraft Movie is approximately 100 minutes, meaning that the final runtime including credits could be as long as 2 hours and as short as 93 minutes. Whilst this may seem short for such a big event type movie, it’s in line with director Jared Hess’ other films, with Nacho Libre being 92 minutes and Napoleon Dynamite being 82 minutes. This puts A Minecraft Movie alongside irreverent and short comedies, that get through the meat of the story without providing much filler. This would likely mean that the movie hits a beat every scene and quickly moves through the main narrative and is not interested in buffing up the runtime with world building and characters outside of the main group.
A Minecraft Movie is directed by Jared Hess and stars Jason Momoa, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Jack Black. The film hits theatres on April 4th, 2025.
