What Is ‘Mickey 17’ About?

Bong Joon-ho’s next film Mickey 17 is a science fiction comedy based on the book Mickey7 written by Ashton Edward. The film follows “disposable” employee (Robert Pattinson) sent on a human expedition to colonize the ice world Niflheim as he undertakes dangerous tasks, only for him to literally die, so a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.

Previously getting nominated for 3 Academy Awards and winning all of them for Parasite, including Best Picture, it’s certain that audiences are excited for Bong Joon-ho’s next film, with the film maintaining a strong third most anticipated position on Letterboxd.

The film was originally supposed to release in theaters on March 29th, 2024, but it was delayed to January 31st, 2025, due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and delays in post-production. Some audience members have expressed concern that the film has a January release date, which is usually not a good month for movies to release in, but the first trailer for the movie proved audiences members are still intrigued, following the success of Parasite, a film that is considered one of the best films ever made.

How Long Is ‘Mickey 17’?

We can exclusively confirm that Mickey 17 has a final runtime of 2 hours and 8 minutes excluding credits. @Cryptic4KQual first reported the film had a runtime of 2 hours and 16 minutes (including credits) on Twitter / X in November last year.

It’s safe to bet that Mickey 17 will be similar to that of Snowpiercer and Okja. Both of those films were directed by Bong Joon-ho . But the question here, why the similarity? Well these two films were primarily in English language, which is usually not the norm for Joon-ho, as he is South Korean, and Parasite for example was primarily in Korean language. Is that the only similarity? No, as the trailer for Mickey 17, which released yesterday, also had a snowy setting and a cold color palette akin to Snowpiercer.
