‘Lanterns’ Midseason Trailer: One Last Case To Solve

This Sunday will see the premiere of the sixth episode of DC Studios’ Lanterns, with the events of 2016 coming to a close. All that’s left now is to find out who murdered Hal Jordan in 2026. Sheriff Kerry and John Stewart are determined to get to the bottom of this as shown in a midseason trailer which HBO has just released highlighting the final three episodes. The midseason trailer, which lasts for 1 minute and 59 seconds, opens at the diner. Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) is seen sitting at one of the booths when John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) sits down next to him. It’s revealed that Hal called him here to say he took the fall for the events of episode 5, we see a scene where Hal is leaving the Rushville Prison, Sheriff Kerry (Kelly Macdonald) is waiting for him outside. John responds by saying Hal didn’t take the fall as he’s responsible for the situation causing people to be killed, we see the destroyed motel and then Hal responds that there’s more than one killer at this table implying that John is equally responsible.

The caption “On The Final 3 Episodes” appears on screen, we return to the end of episode one where Hal Jordan is shown to be killed. Sheriff Kerry asks, “What?” We switch to a funeral scene which is implied to be Hal’s, John responds, “I never thought he’d actually die.” A brief glimpse of Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) knocking on a jail cell with his ring is shown followed by a van driving towards Rushville. Sheriff Kerry says to John, “It could’ve been anyone. This whole goddamn town wanted to kill him” as we see Hal get some dirty looks and someone tries to burn a house that he’s currently in.

We see Guy knock on the prison cell again, we then see him arrive outside of the Rushville Sheriff’s Department. He meets with John (who’s in a cell) and says he can’t help with the murder as its “bad optics.” John says, “you owe me” and we see him turning on a lantern signal of sorts in town which reads, “In Darkest Night, Summon Green Lantern to your service.” Guy reveals that he asked Hal if he had any wisdom to which Hal told him “go climb a rope.” John asks if it’s because he’s a gym teacher and Guy denies it saying Hal is a jerk and correcting John by saying he’s an athletic director.

We see a bridge followed by John and Kerry investigating a storage unit, John seemingly moments after the funeral asks an off-screen character to help him find Hal’s murderer. Back at the Lantern signal a group of people approach John and they get into a fight. The next scene shows John on an alien planet with the Halogram, they approach a floating city. In his cell, we hear Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) say, “Fear can be the most powerful force in the universe.” John is seen on a boat with Halogram and for some reason John pulls out a gun, perhaps he’s hallucinating. We see a young Hal at baseball practice, and his father tells him he can’t hold onto “it” forever, which can be taken to mean the baseball Hal is holding, and also something thematically significant to the character’s relationship to his power ring.

We see a glimpse of an industrial plant followed by someone saying, “Hal didn’t have to die in vain.” We then see Hal in what appears to be a rundown lab, someone approaches him and Hal asks, “What are you?” We appear to be in another part of the industrial plant which resembles the slaughterhouse where Hal and John met Hector Hammond (Jason Manuel Olazabal). John is seemingly in the floating city found on the planet and it’s revealed that Sinestro is out of prison and John interrogates him. A number of action shots are shown including two people in a burning building, John falling into the ocean, Noah saluting as fighter jets fly by (during Hal’s funeral), John discovering an alien’s skull, a football match at Rushville and someone flying by the Lantern signal. Part of the Green Lantern Oath appears during this sequence, “In Blackest Night, No Evil Shall Escape Their Sight.” The trailer ends back at the diner conversation, Hal says the two are square while John disagrees.”

What Is Lanterns About?

Lanterns follows Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and Green Lantern in training, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they investigate a murder in an American hometown. They two also face their own conflict as John believes he’s ready to wear the ring despite Hal’s disapproval. Read the official synopsis below:

“The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

Lanterns is created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. The series stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, and more. The first five episodes are now available on HBO and HBO Max, episode six airs on Sunday, September 20th at 6:00 PM PT / 9:00 PM ET.
