Now, a rumour stemming from anonymous sourcing insider Deuxmoi suggests that Tom Cruise has courted a high-profile awards darling for the ninth instalment. The report alleges that Tom Cruise, best known for the M:I and Top Gun franchises, personally sought out writer-director Chloé Zhao to write and direct the rumoured ninth movie in the Mission: Impossible franchise. A treatment for the film has been said to be already workshopped between the two, with a script in the works. It would mark a leap from the direction of the last few films in the franchise, with Christopher McQuarrie, a close friend and collaborator of Cruise, having helmed the last four entries.
Deuxmoi has an interesting track record, deviating often due to its submission-based outlet format. It would feel weird if Cruise were to switch from McQuarrie to a more awards-oriented director without an action background, but the franchise seems to be turning over a new leaf and changing teams could make that possible.
Chloé Zhao is in the middle of an awards campaign for her Focus Features film Hamnet, a story about a tragedy in the Shakespeare family and how they cope with an immense loss. The film has attracted award attention in many major categories, with lead actress Jessie Buckley leading pundits for Best Actress ahead of the Academy Awards next month.
As for Cruise, he will next star in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger for Warner Bros. Pictures, where he plays the richest man in the world. It marks his return to awards oriented cinema from auteurs, and this could too signify something more for his career and the future of the Mission: Impossible franchise.
