Quentin Tarantino Teases Developing A ‘Kill Bill’ Prequel — Centered On Bill’s Origin

With Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair hitting theaters on December 5th, Quentin Tarantino has been revealing some of his plans for his future projects, which include a Kill Bill prequel.

Widely considered to be one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers of all time and known for his distinctive style, homages, and hip-hop-style filmmaking, Quentin Tarantino has been making all of us wonder what his 10th film will be. Considering that the filmmaker has restricted himself to a very specific rule of directing only 10 films in his career. His latest Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, which was released in 2019 and had a star-studded cast consisting of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, and more.

At some point, Tarantino was set to direct a film titled The Movie Critic starring Brad Pitt as a film critic in the 70s, but eventually scrapped the idea and decided that it wouldn’t be worthy to be his finale, or rather, had been pivoted into a Cliff Booth sequel, one of the main characters of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. The film The Adventures of Cliff Booth is being directed by David Fincher and is set to release next year. Needless to say, The Adventures of Cliff Booth is written and produced by the man himself, but audiences felt it was illogical for him not to direct it himself and stick to his 10-film rule.

As per recent events, Tarantino will be releasing a new version of his Kill Bill movies, which is a culmination of both volumes, titled Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, which will have extra re-edited footage, a previously cut 7.5-minute-long animated sequence and an intermission. As per ticketing sites such as Fandango and AMC theaters, the film’s runtime was listed at 4h 41m, which meant that, excluding the intermission, there could be 18-20+ minutes of new footage.

Tarantino also mentioned that he had an idea for a chapter in the film, before it was split into two parts due to budget and length-related issues, which was titled Yuki’s Revenge, and recently, Tarantino has collaborated with Fortnite to bring the chapter into reality in-game and there will certainly be a version of Yuki’s Revenge in Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair.

Tarantino Mentions Wanting To Develop A Kill Bill Prequel

During an Epic Games panel yesterday for The Lost Chapter: Yuki’s Revenge, Zach Williamson of Culture Crave, mentioned that Tarantino was discussing two potential spin-offs regarding his previous films.

Primarily, he was asked by the host of the panel whether he’d like to visit the Kill Bill universe in the future and he mentioned wanting to develop a prequel regarding Bill and the three godfathers who made him, which makes one question whether he is thinking of directing this after his 10th film which we are yet to know what it is about, or if he wants to develop something like it in Fortnite?

He did mention in the panel that he is interested in creating anime using Unreal Engine though, so those are also other possibilities. Tarantino also mentioned at the panel that he would like to create a project centered on the Vega Brothers, a project he had wanted to direct long ago starring John Travolta and Michael Madsen, who both played in-universe siblings in two different films, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, but felt like it was too limiting due to both actors’ ages.

Here’s the full quote:

“We’ll see. I’ve got other things to do … I have a whole Kill Bill idea in my mind but I was wiped out. I like the idea of a Bill origin. And the three godfathers that made Bill: Esteban Vihaio, Pai Mei, and Hattori Hanzo. Will I live long enough to do that? That remains to be seen”

Maybe Tarantino just wants to finish his 10 films first so he could start working on television, considering that he has been saying that he wants to create a TV show for a long time now. Then afterwards, he would come back to directing films. Like Luke Skywalker says, “No one’s ever really gone.” Accompanying the fact that a director like Tarantino is too good of an auteur to simply just make 10 feature films and then decide to quit, especially when we have other auteurs such as Martin Scorsese who is 83 years old and is reportedly preparing to begin filming What Happens at Night next month.
