Joseph Kosinski Says ‘F1 The Movie’ Sequel Is In Early Development
Joseph Kosinski, the visionary director behind TRON: Legacy, Top Gun: Maverick and F1 The Movie confirms development on the sequel to the F1 film.
F1 The Movie premiered back in June to a modest opening but has since gone on to smash the box office, holding extremely well with great legs. This pattern has only been repeated once the film hit Apple TV earlier this year, making for one of the biggest films of the year and the biggest original film of the year, overtaking Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.
Now, following a quote from Apple CEO Tim Cook at the Emmys, where he said the sequel for F1 The Movie was a definite talking point, attending the Governors Awards, director Joseph Kosinski reiterates that the film is in early stages of development as they try and plot out the direction Sonny Hayes’ (Brad Pitt) life will take next.
“We’re in that stage of just kind of dreaming up what the next chapter for Sonny Hayes would be and for APX GP. But, you know, based on the reaction from around the world to this movie, it is something that people want to see. I’d be happy to go back and do it [again] because we had so much fun making this movie.”

The first film saw NASCAR champion Sonny Hayes (Pitt) take to Formula 1 as the new racer for APX GP (owned by Javier Bardem’s Rubén Cervantes) as he aims to bring the team from the brink and into the limelight. He’s joined by rookie driver Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), and team technical director Kate McKenna (Kerry Condon), who help him reach the finish line. If a sequel were to be greenlit, these characters could possibly return.
The end of F1 The Movie had Hayes leave APX GP to continue his nomadic lifestyle where he goes into the desert and becomes a dune buggy driver, proving just how good of a driver he really is.

F1 The Movie was directed by Joseph Kosinski for Apple Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures, which collaborated on the film.
