‘Mickey 17’ Digital Release Date Revealed

The digital release date for Warner Bros’ ‘Mickey 17’ has been revealed, and it’s a lot sooner than many had expected.

'Mickey 17' Digital Release Date Revealed

After a disappointing opening weekend at the box office and the numbers only getting smaller faster than expected, Warner Bros. seems to have all but given up on Mickey 17 and is accepting their losses, announcing the digital release date for the movie, which is only 3 weeks after it released in cinemas.

The confirmed digital release date for Mickey 17 is March 25th. This is already available to view on most digital retailers, but is also corroborated by streaming trackers WhenToStream

This film was Bong’s ultimate “blank-check” project, greenlit after the massive success of Parasite, which won multiple Academy Awards and solidified him as one of the most visionary directors working today. Given complete creative freedom, Bong crafted a dark, cerebral story that pushes the boundaries of mainstream sci-fi, blending existential themes with his signature social commentary.

However, its heavy subject matter and allegorical references to real-life figures, including an orange-tanned, red-hat-wearing, weird accent-speaking dictator that ruled the ship and bore some uncomfortable relations to a very popular leader causing trouble in our society at the minute, alienating an audience that likely doesn’t want to see negative representations of this kind. And at a time when many seek escapism, Mickey 17’s bleak tone may have made it a tough sell.

Its underwhelming box office performance is yet another setback for Warner Bros., which has been struggling with a streak of theatrical disappointments, including Joker 2 and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The studio has wasted no time shifting Mickey 17 to digital, following its trend of quickly moving underperforming films out of theatres. While its financial struggles may paint a grim picture, it’s highly likely that the movie will find a second life on digital.

Many of Bong Joon-Ho’s movies have been appreciated more over time, and this seems to be no different. All of the people who missed the film in cinemas will catch it at home and either realise what they missed out on or be glad they did.

There is no doubt that some of the more romantic and raunchy elements of the film will gain quick attention online, maybe leading to even more eyes on the movie.
