Francis Ford Coppola Reveals Details For His Next Movie

What is the title of the movie?

Coppola shared that his next movie will be titled Glimpses of the Moon and will be based on Edith Wharton’s novel of the same name.

The novel follows the romantic misadventures of Nick Lansing and Susy Branch, a couple with the right connections but not much in the way of funds. The novel was written in 1922 and as Coppola does, he will likely find a way to maintain that period feel whilst also keeping it relevant to the modern day, specifically as the novel explores ideas of marriage and relationships, which are ever changing, especially in today’s society.

What is the budget of the movie?

Coppola also commented that the budget for the movie will be very cheap and is already in pre production, stating: “I don’t have any money because I invested all the money, that I borrowed, to make ‘Megalopolis’. It’s basically gone”

The reaction to Megalopolis was incredibly divisive but more significantly, it was Coppola’s passion project and one that he had been aspiring to make for years. So much so that he sold big shares of his winery and put $100 million of his own money towards funding the movie, since no studio wanted to finance it. Even after that, he had to put more towards the marketing and distribution of the film since nobody wanted to do that either. He eventually struck a deal with Lionsgate, but they would only handle half of the costs and Coppola would have to cover the other.

Essentially, he used everything on Megalopolis and now his movies are going to be very cheap and have to rely a lot on creative and slick techniques to avoid raising the budget so high.

This should actually be a good thing for the movies he chooses to make in the future, including this one, as it encourages Coppola to think outside of the box and perhaps apply some of his older movie-making techniques to make sure this one comes out just as good.
