What Is Sonic The Hedgehog?

The live-action Sonic The Hedgehog films follow the titular hero Sonic (Ben Schwartz), a hedgehog born with the ability of superspeed, who came to earth after his home was invaded by the Echidna. He eventually catches the interest of franchise antagonist Ivo Robotnik / Dr. Eggman (Jim Carrey), the smartest man in the world who wants to capture the blue hedgehog and learn the source of his power. Sonic must save himself and his new-found family, Thomas Wachowski (James Marsden) and Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter), from the threat that Robotnik poses.

As the series goes on, we’re introduced to new characters, such as Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), an inventor who becomes Sonic’s best friend, and Knuckles (Idris Elba), the strongest warrior in the galaxy and the last of the Echidna tribe. In the latest entry, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, we’re introduced to Shadow The Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves), who possesses immense power.

When Will Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Hit Theatres?

As Sonic The Hedgehog 3 hits digital platforms today, Paramount has confirmed that the next instalment in the franchise, Sonic The Hedgehog 4 will hit theatres on March 19th, 2027. This comes after the news that Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has made 425 Million Dollars worldwide, putting the live-action franchise at a total of 1.1 Billion Dollars at the global box office.

A recent report suggests that Sonic The Hedgehog 4 will begin pre-production in February 2025, with Jeff Fowler returning to direct. This means that the film will have approximately two years and one month of development before its release.

Who’s In The Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Cast? (Spoilers Ahead)

While no official cast has been released by Paramount, we can safely assume that Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, and Keanu Reeves, who plays Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow are set to return. Additionally, we should see some of the human cast, such as James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Lee Majdoub, and possibly Jim Carrey (if concept art from the third film is to be believed) as Thomas Wachowski, Maddie Wachowski, Agent Stone, and Ivo Robotnik.

Additionally, the post-credit scene of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 introduced us to two characters, Amy Rose and Metal Sonic; however, there is no casting for the two characters available at the time of writing.

What Will Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Be About? (Spoilers Ahead)

While plot details are under wraps, with the introduction of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, we can speculate that the film will adapt Sonic CD. The official synopsis for Sonic CD is as follows:

The story follows Sonic the Hedgehog as he attempts to thwart Dr. Eggman’s plans to get the Time Stones on Little Planet, which would grant him control over time itself.

This indicates that the upcoming film could incorporate a form of time travel, further hinted at by Amy Rose’s hammer in the film, which looks very futuristic, and it could also see the return of the infamous Dr Robotnik. This also points towards a fan-favorite time traveler, Silver The Hedgehog, possibly making an appearance in the film.

Amy Rose, who first appears in Sonic CD as another staple of what the film dubs “Team Sonic.” Amy is a pink hedgehog who has famously been depicted as having a crush on Sonic The Hedgehog. She can be described as a cheerful, though slightly erratic, girl with a positive attitude and boundless energy.

Metal Sonic’s first appearance was also in Sonic CD. Metal Sonic is described as a very advanced version of a Badnik, the name given to Robotnik’s robots. Metal Sonic was created with the sole purpose of destroying the blue hedgehog, and he can even mimic Sonic’s moves and speed. Metal Sonic is described as a cold-hearted, aggressive, and ruthless killer.

Silver makes his debut in Sonic The Hedgehog (2006), more fondly known as Sonic 06. Silver is yet another hedgehog; however, he comes from 200 years into the future, when the world will be thrown into chaos. He goes back into the past to prevent this future from occurring and occasionally runs into Sonic as a result. Silver possesses psychokinetic abilities that allow him to interact with physical objects using his mind. He’s described as a kind-hearted and optimistic individual who always wears his heart on his sleeve.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is directed by Jeff Fowler and stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic The Hedgehog, Keanu Reeves as Shadow The Hedgehog, Jim Carrey as Ivo Robotnik & Gerald Robotnik. The film is now available for purchase on digital platforms.
