‘What If…?’ Season 3 Episode 5: “What If… The Emergence Destroyed the Earth?” Review
The What If…? episode explores an alternate universe in which the Eternals weren’t successful.
Episode 5 of What If…? season 3 is titled “What If… The Emergence Destroyed the Earth?”. Immediately my excitement skyrocketed because not only is this a concept I was hoping would play out but also it meant more Eternals related content. I’m always looking forward to different interpretations of apocalyptic / wasteland settings and this episode definitely delivered on that, there are some stunning environments featured that made me drop everything I was doing to just admire it.
The episode felt a lot more high stakes compared to the others, and I loved how Vision was utilised in the episode. The choice of not allowing Vision to speak helped to give him a more sinister and creepy vibe that elevates his power set.
Meanwhile, I loved seeing Riri (Dominique Thorne) showcase her smarts throughout the episode, I always find myself inspired by moments like those. Her new power set was also exciting to witness, even though I’m fully aware anything is possible in What If…? I’m still surprised to see what she’s capable of.
With the rights regarding Spider-Man and Spider-Man adjacent characters allowing Marvel Animation to use the characters in animated television I was happy and especially pleased with the inclusion of Mysterio. The trippiness in his illusions really drew me to the character in Spider-Man: Far From Home and it’s kept consistent in this episode though it felt a bit predictable at times.
I think my only issue with the episode was its outcome, it felt very predictable with the dialogue used throughout the episode that it didn’t feel as impactful as it should have.
What If…? Season 3, Episode 5 stars Jeffrey Wright as Uatu The Watcher, Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams and Alejandro Saab as Mysterio. The series’ sixth episode, “What If… 1872?”, hits Disney+ tomorrow at 12AM PST with episodes following daily at the same time, through December 29th.
