The third and final season of What If…? is almost here. Here’s everything you need to know about the What If…? Season 3 episode lengths, release times, and more!
What If…? first began development in 2018 with the premise being an anthology series that explores branched timelines caused by different events occurring in the MCU films we already know. Marvel officially announced the project in April 2019. In August 2019, A.C. Bradley was announced as the head writer for the series, and Bryan Andrews served as the storyboard artist and director.
During a season 2 event known as “The Nine Days Of What If…?”. A promotional website went live that gave teases to future episodes and eventually a clip from the third season, which featured the Winter Soldier, Red Guardian, and Goliath.
In January 2024, we received new stills from the upcoming season, which included a Mech episode where Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) would pilot mechs to defeat an unknown enemy. At the end of October, we also got new snippets from the final season, which included another scene from the mech episode alongside a Cowboy Shang-Chi and an invasion from the Nine Realms.
Fans previously saw some footage from these episodes at D23 in August. Fans saw the first logo at D23 Brazil, which teased variants old and new, such as Kahhori, Frost Giant Loki, Agatha Harkness, Moon Knight, Kingo, Arishem, White Vision, Storm, and more.
What Is ‘What If…?’ Season 3 About?
The season will feature new stories with characters found in the first phase of the Multiverse Saga. From the trailer, it appears that Uatu will be judged for interfering in different universes and breaking the vow he made long ago. Additionally, the tentacle monster described as “Hydra’s Champion” in the first episode of season 1 will make a return, likely causing a teamup between variants old and new.
The official synopsis is as follows:
Marvel’s animated series What If…? returns in Season 3 for its culminating adventure through the multiverse. Watch as classic characters make unexpected choices that will mutate their worlds into spectacular alternate versions of the MCU. The Watcher (voice of Jeffrey Wright) will guide viewers as the series traverses new genres, bigger spectacles, and incredible new characters.
When Does ‘What If…?’ Season 3 Release?
The first episode will be released on December 22nd. New episodes will be released daily until December 229th. All episodes will be released at 12 PM PT / 9 PM ET. See the full episode release date schedule below:
