‘28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple’ Receives 2026 Release Date
Not even a few weeks after the release of 28 Years Later’s trailer, its sequel, The Bone Temple, now has a release date.
The follow-up to Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later will soon be headed to theatres. Read more about the 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple release date below.
Wasting no time, studio Sony Pictures recently announced the release date for one of the sequels to the highly anticipated 28 Years Later. Earlier this month, Sony dropped a trailer for 28 Years Later, giving us an inside look at the zombie apocalypse film. While the trailer didn’t reveal awfully much about the plot, the synopsis did, which you can read below:
“It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
‘28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple’ Release Date Announced
Fresh off Marvel Studios’ first box office bomb The Marvels, director Nia DaCosta is set to take the reins from Boyle for the second part in the trilogy, which will officially release in theatres from January 16th, 2026.
The film will be released 6 months after the release of 28 Years Later (Part I?), showing some confidence from the studio as well as the producers involved. This is not entirely unexpected of course, with the franchise created by auteurs Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) and Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War), who will return to pen the scripts for the second part.
Both 28 Years Later and Bone Temple were filmed together earlier this year, being shot back to back with the cast consisting of Aaron Taylor Johnson (The Fall Guy), Jodie Comer (The Last Duel), Cilian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) and a few others. Due to the nature of zombie apocalypse media, it’s likely that some of these cast members will not return in the sequel as their characters may be turned into rage infected over the course of 2025 release.
DaCosta is known for her films Candyman, which rebooted the iconic 1992 film and starred Yahya Abdul Mateen II (Watchmen, The Matrix Resurrections), as well as The Marvels, which is to date the lowest grossing movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Up next for the director is Hedda, an adaptation of the play by Henrik Ibsen, which stars past collaborator Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok, Creed) as well as Imogen Poots (Vivarium, Outer Range).
28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple is directed by Nia DaCosta and written by both Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. The film is officially scheduled for release on January 16, 2026, or Martin Luther King weekend.
